I know of a P-14 with a nasty dark bore,I can pick up for a real good price. How hard would it be to convert to 358win or 35 whelen? Could the barrel be re-bored or would a new one be needed?

Rebore will work fine, but with the P14 bolt face, you're looking at something like the 358 Norma Mag. The 35 Whelen and 358 Win cases are too small for a stock P14 bolt face. 358 Norma is one hell of a cartridge though, good for anything that walks in NA. - dan

X2!! Dan has spoken it as it is!! Eagleye

For the amount you'll spend on re-boring, just get a new barrel.

The P-14 action will accommodate any belted magnum cartridge, including the popular 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win. Mag, .338 Win Mag and .375 H&H Mag, to name a few.

Barrels made by world-class Canadian barrel-makers are readily available and any decent gunsmith can do this job for you.

A p-14 will need a new magizine box if you change it to .358 norma and the feed feed ramp will need to be altered as well.
I have m-17 that was rebored to .358 norma and it shoot great.

Ron Smith in Alberta does it. I haven't had one done for quite a few years now, so I would phone hm and ask. He does top notch reboring and makes great barrels. I don't have his phone number handy (I'm traveling for work again), but a search here should find it. - dan

Another cool wildcat that would work well in that action would the 350 G&H, which is simply a 375H&H case necked down to 35cal.

It's a classic old wilcat that would be very easy to work with.

I saw one Rigby mauser shot out .303 bore that the author rebored to .338/.303 keeping the origonal barrel and it's markings.1-10 twist with 200gr bullets.................Harold

A P14 action can be modified to really big calibres. A few years ago, I had an idea to make a 500 A Square (necked up 460 Weatherby), ordered the magazine followers from Gunparts. Along with the followers came the diagrams for receiver modifications if you want to go beyond 375 H&H length. If you have a US source/address, snowbird status or dual citizenship, reasonable barrels can be purchased prefitted from Shaw for the 358/375/458 class of rifles for the P14.

Before sinking a bunch of $$$$ in it is it an ER p-14? Not as good as the Win or other Rem model strengthwise.................Harold
