Can a S&W 686 cylinder be reamed to accept .357 Maximum?

Well, the 357 maximum case length without a bullet is listed at 1.605". My 686 cylinder is only 1.630" long. So I'm gonna go with no...
 
Yes but the cylinder would still be too short by about .210..... You could put it in the cylinder but it would stick out and not be able to close......

The Ruger Super Blackhawk has a longer cylinder (and frame) to accommodate the .315 extra length of the Maximum


I just put a factory S&B .357 in my 686 and there is only .105 left to the end of the cylinder with a 158gr FN.
 
Apparently Dan Wesson made some revolvers in 357 Maximum back in the late 70's and 80's. I'd love to get one myself. I have a T/C Contender that shoots 357 Max. What a fun round to shoot!!!

Yes they did. Back in my big bore silhouette days the problem was that revolver shooters of the .357 Max were seeing significant flame cutting of the top strap in less than 2000 rounds. Large doses of slow burning powder acted like a cutting torch on the top strap. Awesome round in a TC Contender though. Good knock down power for all silhouettes including the tough 200 meter rams.

That is interesting and good to know. I would love to pick up one of those revolvers at some point.
 
HI; I used a Ruger Bisley 357 Mag. for many years of silhouettes and with winchester 296 and 180 grain lead gas check bullets. Got flame cutting of the top strap, it was there but never got that deep.

I have one, a 40S V8 if I'm remembering the numbering system correctly. Big revolver, makes shooting 357 max pretty easy. Also have a 10" Ruger Super Blackhawk in the same cartridge. Some days I miss silhouette shooting. - dan
