The title says it all, the 99 was made in the early 50's. I would just like to have a bit more power and range and I have no money so I'm trading my swede mauser in the 6.5x55mm

Probably, although the magazine spool would likely need to be changed. Rechambering would require removal of the barrel, etc. If you are concerned about costs, the alteration would not be inexpensive. From a hunting perspective, I don't know that you would notice much difference between a 6.5x55 and a .308. Both are excellent. As far as that goes, there is nothing wrong with a .300. It is a bit less powerful than a .308, and the velocity is a bit lower, but it has been a good cartridge for a long time.

308

With the costs and waiting time involved at the smith, I think you would be ahead of the game by sellling off the 300 Savage and buying a 99 in 308. I had a low mileage 99 in 308 with lots of scuffs and nicks etc and had to let it go for $250 a couple of years ago. It sold fast but yes those deals are out there. I would think a decent 99 in 300 savage would bring slightly less than the more powerful 308 and a lot less than the smith fees going the other route. Of course just my 2 cents worth.
