Probably, although the magazine spool would likely need to be changed. Rechambering would require removal of the barrel, etc. If you are concerned about costs, the alteration would not be inexpensive. From a hunting perspective, I don't know that you would notice much difference between a 6.5x55 and a .308. Both are excellent. As far as that goes, there is nothing wrong with a .300. It is a bit less powerful than a .308, and the velocity is a bit lower, but it has been a good cartridge for a long time.
