Can anybody recommend a good tropical round?

Depends on the era you have in mind. Sporting or military?
I would say British military service ammo. 303British or 577-450. The sun never sets on the Empire.

The next thing that comes to mind is Vietnam ...

What caliber rifle?

By tropical, do you mean ammo that works well in hot weather?

Any brand name commercial ammo will work in hot weather. It is tested at both very hot and very cold temps.

Without knowing which part of the tropics you are talking about anything from a 22rimfire to a 458 LOTTE could be applicable and don't forget a shotgun.

Not nearly enough information for the answer you want. Some nations require a minimum of .375 H&H for big game.

WW2 German 8mm came in a dedicated Tropical load, but that was the last ones I can recall easily. Most modern stuff is good to go. Federal Premium with a nickle plated case and waterproofing would seem a good choice.
