I received this 303 when I was 12 years old. It has been passed down from my great-grandfather who fought in World War II. I do not believe that he acquired it through his service rather it has been used throughout these Generations as a hunting rifle mainly. I'd love to know if anyone can identify this rifle and can tell me if it was produced in the form that you see it or perhaps did my great-grandfather modify it, as was his tendency. I don't know a lot about these rifles, so any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

It could be an E.A.L. rifle (Essential Agencies Limited) which was a commercially converted Long Branch military number 4 action that was built in the early 50s in Toronto, it had that peculiar look of having the charger bridge machined off. It was not a one piece stock though so if this rifle is an E.A.L. action like gaff mentioned it must have been converted.
It also had the old round cocking piece which is interesting and fairly rare.

Nothing to do with EAL.
It is a nicely done sporter converted in a one piece stock. Mk.I*, so either Long Branch or Savage. The Mk. I cocking piece is a nice touch. With the removal of the butt socket, the original serial will be long gone. If the bore is in good shape, it will be a dandy hunting rifle.

And that tells you the serial number of the bolt. Which may or may not be that of the rifle. The rifle may have been made up using original matching parts from one rifle.

That rifle really looks like one of Elwood Epps conversions.

He wasn't the only smith doing them back in the day but the lines of the OP's rifle are very reminiscent of the work Elwood did.

Elwood marked some of his rifles but not all of them.

I had one of Mr Epps conversions to a one piece stock, I miss that rifle but it helped pay for a divorce.

Nice rifle. Deserves to be hunted with.

EAL used commercial Jostam recoil pads. Anyone else could have used them.
EAL receiver contour is different.
EAL front sight ramp is different.
EAL sights (either model) are different.
