Can anyone identify this rifle? I inherited it, thought it was a version of the mosin-nagant, however it wont accept a 7.62x54r round, it is too big. It is marked "7.62" on the receiver though. Most all other markings are scratched off. I can get better pictures / more pictures later but this is the best i can do for right now. Thanks!

It is a sported M91 Mosin Nagant that has been in Finland. Doesn't look as if it has been rebarrelled. If it won't accept 7.62x54R cartridges, you are going to have to determine what has been done to it.

A sporterized M91 Mosin Nagant. Likely one of the american produced rifles for the tzar. Could possibly be converted to 30-06 but will need many more photos particularly of the receiver to accurately identify the model and information

The only reason I say it might be a 30-06 is because in the 1920s after the Communists defaulted on the Tsars deal for producing Mosin Nagants in America, the American Government bought them all to save those companies from bankruptsy. Then a company named Bannerman converted some to 30-06 as 7.62x54r wasn't a round that was really available in North America at that time. Those rifles converted rifles were made into single shots and by todays standards are considered sketchy to shoot.

Thanks everyone for the information. Its good to know exactly what rifle I own. Sporterized M91. It did end being a 7.62x54r round. What happened was i tried to chamber a 7.62x39 round and out and when i removed it out came an old 7.62x54r casing wrapped around the x39 cartridge. It must have been wedged in there pretty good and looked impossible to even tell it was in there.

A headless 54r case was stuck in the chamber? That doesn't sound comforting!

Perhaps the previous owner tried shooting something in it that they shouldn't have?

yeah the casing was broken in the end where the primer would be and the shell did look slightly different then the 54r cardridges I have. But yeah not to comforting! But the good thing is it chambers the 54r cartridge perfectly now and its looks like its going to be a pretty fun gun to fire! seems like a small rifle in contrast of the round it fires!

Geez, with a headless casing being stuck in there at one time, I know I wouldn't want to fire it!!!

If you want to fire this thing, I'd have a competent gunsmith check it out first.

It may not have been a 7.62 x 54R case at all, but rather the remains of something like a .303 or .308, fireformed to the chamber.

That was my thought. Of it was brass it likely wasn't 54r, and since most surplus is corrosive it does not come out easy if it sits for any length of time.
