can anyone tell me a bit of history on this Mauser?

Those numbers dont mean anything.
What is the letter block? Its a letter below the receiver serial.

Floorplate, triggerguard, mag follower, sight base under screw, sight leaf, sight adjuster, front barrel band, rear barrel band, safety, bolt, extractor, bolt shroud, cocking piece, firing pin and probably action screws will all be serialled. Also the stock but youve already said it didnt match. Ive also never seen those little stock markings before.

Could be a restored sporter with that quality of bluing.

Similar style stock markings on a PPSh-41.

The photos below shows the finish on a 41 Portuguese Contract Mauser K98.
The same year as your byf 41.
I believe that these 41 dated Mausers were high finish....but I am not a K98 expert.

A 41 Portuguese Contract Mauser rifle......how different would a code byf 41 K98 Mauser be?

czscotia, I think this a handsome looking byf 41.
I can't comment on refinishing or the stock markings and reddish stock color.
If you ever find out about about the stock markings...please let me know.
I suspect they may be Yugo inspector codes????

Can you post better pics of all the numbers on the bolt, gas shroud, safety, cocking piece, etc?

Generally, the Yugo reworks had the SN restamped on the bolt handle between the round knob and the bolt root. Also, they restamped the receiver on the RHS with the SN.

Your 41 number looks faint, but could just be the pic. Most Yugo receivers were ground down like with a long piece of Emery Cloth and faint numbers and letters.

Maybe your stock is the only Yugo part of it and the rest is a gunsmith reblue in the 50's.

Coyote ugly, here is the pic. can't seem to take a better picture sorry. The serial number on the safety is staggered??

Nice rifle though definitely a reblue. The smeared MOD 98 on the siderail is a dead giveaway of overzealous buffing. That didn't happen at Oberndorf and the Yugos/ East Germans/ Czechs etc. never put a high polish on refurbs.
