I don't think that I smell the partridge but rather the type of habitat that they are usually found in, i.e. lots of clover, types of berries, etc

yes

I do alot of grouse hunting and it,s only ever happened to me once but I never forgot it.I was walking a trail when I passed a spot and noticed a smell, it smelled like warm chicken like if you put a whole chicken on a counter for a day and I walked back a step or 2 and flushed a grouse.I thought it was just me until I saw this thread but it has never happened since

Grouse tend to inhabit the same general areas from year to year...for reasons known only to the ruffies. Therefore one puts his gaurd up when approaching these areas...smell or no smell!
Likely has to do with optimum habitat requirement.

When hunting my favorate grouse cover I often break a twig off and stick a spent shell casing on this after bagging a bird. Amazing how often grouse are taken...or missed within a few yards of last seasons kill.

THey have a smell, but so do deer, bear and alot of other game animals. IT's alot more noticeable during the winter when the air is clear of other scents that mask it. I'd suppose that it's the oil off the feathers one actually smells, but who knows. I know what it is because I have smelled that smell around barnyard chickens that ran about my dad's yard when I was a boy. If they are roaming about the yard they are clean and take the time to keep clean, so they didn't actually smell like dung.

I think that I may have a fairly good sense of smell because I could smell my fisher sets from a couple hundred meters out if the bait was strong when I trapped too.

Well, I was walking a trail into a spot that I like to hunt for whitetail and as I got about halfway and stopped just to look around and listen, as I stood there in the wind came this odor , it was fresh poop smell!!!! I know not related to smelling grouse but I do think that something was playing games with me that morning, taunting me, challenging me.
True story.
