Can I carry slugs while duck hunting?

While duck hunting last weekend I saw a nice deer within slug shooting distance. That's when I wondered if it's legal to carry a slug while while hunting waterfowls. I'm in Ontario and shotgun deer hunting starts November 5th. Is it legal to carry slugs for the purpose of deer hunting while waterfowl hunting or (the other way to look at it) can I carry steel ammo for waterfowl hunting while deer hunting? I would carry with me all the necessary licenses and tags.

Thank you

Yes, as long as you have all the proper licences and tag for the WMU you are hunting and the game is in season. You'll probablly need to be wearing hunter orange also. I'd focus on one or the other. I'd also look up this information elsewhere because I could be wrong..

Just be nice to the warden if you get checked. Piss him off and he can lay a charge of possession of lead shotgun shells while hunting waterfowl. ;)

In Alberta hunting waterfowl with a solid projectile is illegal, so you could get tagged for that if you were carrying both steel shot and slugs. My deer season opens next week and I plan on having a shotgun and steel shot shells in the truck in case we get the chance at some geese as well. I see no legal issues with that, since we will be carrying rifles for deer and the shotguns for the geese.

Didnt know that. Ive always heard that you could blow the barrel apart when shooting a slug through a full choke

thx

I've considered carrying deer ammo while duck hunting, but I just don't think it's worth it. There are too many charges they could lay if they wanted to. Besides, if you're duck hunting properly, you won't see any deer anyway, because you'll be shooting too many ducks ...

The problem was there weren't any ducks around so I took a walk down a railway track to see if there were ducks in the adjacent beaver ponds and that's when I saw the deer.

I will send a quick email to the MNR enforment office in Kempville to get a definitive answer.

Thanks everyone

I spoke to the call centre for M.N.R. and they informed me that I can hunt partridge with lead and have steel shot on me if I come across a beaver pond and decide to shoot ducks. The guy said just make sure you shoot the ducks with steel shot, so remember to change shells. That being said as long as I have the proper licences i.e. migratory and small game and the season is open for both game. So I would imagine it to be the same. But when in doubt ask M.N.R..

Well where I live you definately would be charged for posession of lead regardless of "what you planned to use it for". Everytime we get checked waterfowl hunting, even in a barley field for Canada geese the wardens go through every shell in our bags with an electronic gadget that checks the magnetic level of the shot in each shell. Not sure where you're from but hopefully the wardens are more leiniant than they are here........

If I recall correctly, in B.C. you may not have lead shot in your possession while waterfowl hunting. My interpretation is that slugs are not lead shot and you should be OK, but
I would check with a CO first.

good to know I'm heading to Ontario next week for deer and I have my federal and ontario small game. No kidding, you can push a slug out of a modified choke? I always thought it had to be IC.?
What kind of slug?

I emailed the Ontario MNR and got the following answer this morning:

Thank you for your question. I assume that you are referring to a deer season during which it is legal to hunt with a shotgun. In this case, you may carry steel shot for waterfowl hunting and slugs for deer hunting. You may not shoot the waterfowl with the slugs, nor may you shoot the deer with steel shot, unless it is of size equal to or greater than SG or number one buck.

I will now be carrying slugs, orange vest/hat and my deer license while duck hunting during shotgun deer season.

Thanks everyone or your input

You should probably be checking the migrtory bird act. That is the act that covers waterfowl hunting and i am pretty sure it says u cannot possess lead shot while waterfowl hunting.

Here is a copy of the email with my personal information removed.

while it may be legal if both season are open and you have licenses...

BUT.. if you where duck hunting, and had a slug.. if I was the CO, I'd ask where your hunters orange was ;).. if you didn't have it.. you'd end up with a ticket ;)

if you want to play both games, then you need to do it properly and adhere to both rules fully..
