I'm getting pretty good with the 9mm and want to try 40S&W.

No you can't - the opposite is true (.40 S&W to 9x19mm) however...

G17 slide won't fit a G22 barrel.
a G22 slide can have a 9mm conversion barrel however.

You can however get a G22 slide and barrel for your G17 frame, but, you a not far off from buying a new gun at this point.

The Glock 22 frame has three pins vs the two pins in the G17. This means the stronger G22 can be converted to 9mm, but not the reverse.

What everybody here has said is bang on. I do hear that you can get a .380acp barrel for your G17 and shoot .380 just for fun

To clarify, both frame models(17,22) have a total of
only 3 pins. Two locking block and one trigger group, no ?

depends on the Gen....G17 Gen 1-3 are 1 pin. Gen 3.5 is 2 pin.

Gen 2, Gen 3, and Gen 3.5.
