To expand, there are some modern rimfire rifles that are okay to fire if it was designed to not strike the breech face. The reason why you shouldn't fire a rimfire firearm is because the firing pin strikes the edge of the chamber and can deform the firing pin or chamber.
Typically if a rimfire firearm is safe to dry fire it will explicitly say in their manual or ask the manufacturer if you are unsure.

If it was manufactured recently it is OK to dry fire.
Older models no.
It is a semi, so it is going to happen unless you are very good at counting your rounds fired.
