Can I Dryfire a Glock?

"Never dry fire" is carry over from the olden days... it's ok now. :)
I've got a P229 and I must dry fire the thing a hundred times a day at least.
No problems yet :D

Who told you you couldn't dry fire your guns? Was this a PAL instructor? Regardless, whoever told you that is smoking some cheap stuff. Rimfire firearms are much more at risk for damage from dry firing due to the primer being located in the rim. Centre fire firearms made by a QUALITY manufacturer will have no issues with dry firing. The impact of firing live rounds will induce much more shock to your firing pin and firing system than dry firing ever will.

I dry fire all my firearms, including my rimfire guns. I have never broken or damaged a firing pin. As far as I'm concerned if your firearm cannot handle being dry fired than you bought a poor quality firearm.

On another note, here's some more myths that some "instructors" like to spread. (These are the correct answers below.)

Hollow point ammo is legal in Canada.
Shotguns used for target or plinking purposes may contain more than three rounds(5 max for semi autos)
10+ round magazines are legal in semi auto rimfire rifles.

Thanks for stating these things...;) Well put!

Let me just make something clear. I do not wish to discredit PAL instructors(I am one!) but I get real tired of hearing bogus claims about laws or restrictions from instructors. If you don't know, don't answer. This applies to everyone. Nothing spreads faster than the truth like a good story.

I was just going to say that it hasn't been stripped if the question is just being asked now .. but alas, I'm the third person to bring this to light. Oh well, I needed to type something today ... even if it is just to reiterate.

Just for the record I KNOW you can dry fire centre fire pistols but I don't know anything about the Glock system so I thought I'd better ask.

If this topic is too remedial or boring I apologize.

I'm going to lay in bed now and shoot my toes off one by one in shame. I'll post pics later.

Which ones can be damaged and why?

P38's can suffer breakage that will cause the gun to discharge when the decocker is used. I'm sure there are a few others. Having said that, modern guns (all, AFAIK) may be dry-fired. I still use snap caps, they're cheap.

So thats why they restrict mags to 10 rnds and not less. So you can shoot off your toes without needing to reload!

Will my #### fall off if I dry fire ?

If I remember the video, it will unless you pull the op-rod back a bit...

Wait a minute...this isn't the battle rifle forum? What the hell are you doing in here?

For that matter, what the hell am I doing in here?:runaway:

What's a good place to score some snap caps (local preferably)? How loud are they?

I have found them at lebarons. You can probably order them. They don't make any more noise than regular dryfiring. They are just dummy rounds. It just gives the pin something to hit.

Good Thread!

I almost never dry fire my firearms! My Dad always said is wasn't good for the fireing pins. I just thought it has something to do with them being slammed with no resistance.... Anyway, good thread!

The answer is in your question. I also use snap caps(when I can find them). No point in simply practicing trigger control when you can practice your malfunction drills.
