I have a limbsaver that fits perfectly side to side, but extends about 1/8th of an inch on both top and bottom. Its not a huge deal I can probably add an ammo holder to hide it, but I would prefer grinding the excess off.
Take to a good gunsmith not as easy as u might think keeping the contour correct . All recoil pads have a steel plate if they didn't they would flex when I put on the butt and would not stay true to the face of the butt stock
Limbsavers don't have a metal plate that I've seen. That said, the precision fit pads do not grind well, and the grind to fit ones need special attention to look good.
Pachmayrs have a steel plate in them which can show if too big a pad is used. I would suspect that a precision fit pad would have the insert closer to the surface than a grind to fit pad. I've only used one Limbsaver and did not find a steel insert but there must be some hard insert material in there to keep the pad rigid.
