can i kill a crow with a .22 pellet

What do you mean "can I"?

Of course you can - the question is are you allowed to. You can kill a crow (and a racoon if you wanted to) with a .177 cal pellet.

its hard to say -- theyre very hardy birds.
ive had two survive chest shots with .22 CBs (30 grain, ~750 FPS), which are quite a bit more powerful than a non-PAL air rifle.

its also pretty difficult to hit them at short range, since theyre incredibly wary and will take off the moment they see you with anything remotely resembling a gun.

i do it with an air rifle, i use the crosman phantom, it goes just under 500fps, get a scope, hit em in the head.........other wise its like using bird shot on a wild turkey!

if you head shot em they go down easy.....other wise anything beyond 20m or so, wont have the punch to kill it properly and quick....im my opinion.

make sure you have your hunting license too, you need a small game tag for crows last i checked.

for the price of an air gun, why not pick up a used 22 and some crow decoys.....set one in a tree like a lookout.....a couple more on the ground........a half loaf of bread......and they will come in.

cheers

if the crows land to eat the bread ,
the next time you put some bread out for them , take some starting fluid ( the ether based stuff ) and soak the bread in it .

they eat the bread , then pass out .

i know of one farmer who while the birds where passed out , would paint them with orange buckermans paint ( water based ) .
there would be orange crows all over his farm :D

No Really...

really really really really really really really try for a head shot :D

When you have it lined up in your sight(scope) and it is cawing , wait till it is bobbing its head and when you time it on the bob up, let it rip!!!
One dead crow, shot many this way from 25yrds and under with my Chinese $65.00 air rifle.
Good Shooting.

I have a 22 but it make to much noise for my neighbour. I will try head shoot with a .22 pellet gun with a jsb predator pellet. In the description they said:
Delivers penetration and shock to vital organs. Cuts and shatters bone on contact.

I can tell you this - at one point in life, I had a g/f who's mom being retired and loosing her husband was so bored that she bought a pellet h/g, well under 500fps. We both were at work that day. To our surprise, my g/f got a call that her mom shot a crow being on her property, but... the crow was shot in mid air and fell into neighbours' pool where kids were and they called the cops. All in all, cops didn't charge old lady and let her have her pellet gun back on condition she takes it back to the store for refund. This was in Surrey where it's illigal (as it turned out) to discharge pellet guns....
To old lady's credit, she got the crow about 15-20 meters away and in flight!!!! This i what Sask old ladies are capable of :)

You can kill a crow with a .22 pellet if you hit in the right spot.

I killed a groundhog with a .22 pellet in a crosman phantom going 495 advertised so probably around 400 and it killed it. It wasn't pretty but she eventually went down after minutes of growling.

Killed a muskrat years ago with a .177 airgun using the darts they sell for them. 1 shot to the back of the head while it was swimming away, 18 yds for distance so the .22 will do the job on a crow.

I got a black squirrel with my bolt action .22 Crossman backpacker ( or something).
I used special .22 pellets with a red plastic sharp tip.
He dropped from the bird feeder, and made it to the top of the fence, then fell to the ground without a twitch. No blood.
Hit him just in front of the right shoulder from about 30'.
30 pumps, and it rocks!

Get yourself some cci cb long ammo for the .22 and use that. Makes the same noise as a pellet gun. I use 'em outta my semi, they don't cycle the action but it becomes a quick little straight pull bolt gun lol. Its hard on magpies I can tell ya that much.

one thing you gotta be careful with is the CBs will pass right through a crow as if it wasnt even there, and they ricochet like crazy. proper backstop is especially important.

when i was a kid i shot numerous crows with plain jane pointed pellets out of my .177cal 490fps Winchester pellet gun
