Since fouling affects accuracy, can I leave my gun that was shooting 777 powder a little dirty, so my first shot on a hunt is consistent? It sure looks clean after running just a patch down the barrel. I don't want to wash it thoroughly and have to foul it on the morning of a hunt.

Everyone tells me that I need to fire a fouling shot first before the gun will shoot consistently. I don't want to do that at 6:00 in the field when I hunt. I have no problem shooting a dozen shots without loss of accuracy. Its just that if I take the gun home, clean the barrel thoroughly with water, etc, then my first and hopefully only shot at the deer will be through a squeaky clean barrel, instead of a slightly dirty one, like it was sighted in for. I'm wondering if I can put the gun away, having fired a shot or two through it, then its ready to load and shoot accurately??
dont leave it overnight with out cleaning any type of bp it will rust. that said when i shoot 777 i dont take it apart and do the water thing. running three patches with hoppes 9 on them is enough to clean it with out the fear of rust.
I sight my rifle in so that the first shot from a clean barrel is bang on target. In fact the first 3 shots from my rifle hit within 3" at 100 yards. I run a couple of patches through the bore to pick up any excess lube, fire a cap to clean the fire channel, and load it up. It has worked for me for the past 18 years or so.
