Can I make my SKS into a "bolt action"?

For those of you that have successfully used an SKS without the piston, what ammo were you using? When I tried it with Czech surplus ammo, I had to mortar the rifle to get the action open.

It was either PRVI or reloaded PRVI for me. Worked pretty slick. With the rifle benched, one hand working the trigger, the other working the bolt (the one, and only time being a lefty is an advantage), you can actually fire at a decent rate.
 
If your worried about recovering brass, why don't you just buy a tarp? Use it as a wall / catch basin. You can buy a pretty big piece of plastic for a lot less hassle...
 
Is there any brass catcher that is compatible with the sks? Would probably be more fun than a bolt action sks and still having to chase down brass.

I don't want my brass going forward of the firing line, and I don't want to be gathering up a tarp out of the muck and puddles either.
My question was about removing the piston, my thanks to those who addressed that question.
 
Now, I realize that we are talking about an SKS here, but if you're saving your brass for working up reloads, your POI will be slightly different when you put that piston back in. Again, this IS an SKS we're talking about, so it may not even be enough to really change anything, but something to keep in mind. I did the ejection port mod on mine, and it now spits brass more or less to 2-3 O'clock 8-10 feet away.
 
Remove the piston if you are using brass case or plated cases (zinc or brass) only... If you fire lacquered cases (brown, green or grey cases), the varnish will melt and the cases will stick in your chamber because the cases are not immediately extracted like in semi-auto mode... Then you may have to use a hammer and a rod to remove the stuck case AND have to use acetone to remove the lacquer residue from your chamber! Steel cases are not reloadable anyways... On the plus side, they are easy to pick up with an industrial magnetic broom! (Home Depot, 20$ when on sale last I saw one)
 
I tried a couple rounds like this with my sks worked fine , i will continue to use this when load developing ect when I don't want to loose my brass milsurp steel can go in the weeds
