i have some older 12ga shotguns, with fixed choke sizes. is there a chart that shows a safe shot size to choke size? (bb or other steel shot)
lookin to hunt migratory birds with them:)
thanks

I wouldn't shoot steel through an older shotgun with a full choke. Depending on how old the shotgun is, modified and improved are typically fine.

If you are going to put in interchangable chokes, the gunsmith should let you know if the wall of the barrel is too thin to cut down and put in threads. Especially on older guns. My father did this to an older wingmaster and the chokes worked fine, but the wall of the barrel is so thin that when he put the bead back on, it wouldnt stay. I tried metal gluing, welding, everything and the bead would blow off every time you shot it. Now whenever I use my fathers gun, I just put on one of them snap on fibre optic sights.

when this steel b/s started i wrote the various companies giving model number and serial- turned out most of mine could (vintage 75) provided i stick to 2 or smaller- also be aware you have to PATTERN your load - steel turned my full choke into a superfull ie focussed the shot pattern a LOT NARROWER
