Can I substitute small pistol primers with small rifle primers?

Can I substitute small pistol primers with small rifle primers?

I do.

No dicernable difference at the chronograph.

You can.....but small rifle primers have a thicker cup shell and may be a bit tough to get a good firing pin hit,and they are a bit hotter

I have read in a number of reloading forums that with CCI (and maybe others) the standard small rifle primers are the same as small pistol magnum primers in terms of cup thickness, amount and composition of priming compound. If you're at or close to max loads, back down the powder a little. If you're loading mild target stuff probably won't make enough difference to worry about. Obviously take internet advice with the grain of salt it deserves and make your own decisions about your safety and equipment...

I've done it but had to crank up the spring on my smith and wesson revolvers

yup done it as well with great results, however slightly undercharged the loads when using SR primers..

Before loading a bunch, shoot 10 primed cases in the loading room to make sure your pistol will fire them. Most of mine will, but one of them gets 100% misfires.

if you do do it you really need to check that the primers are sealing, if you look on the brian enos forum and search breach face erosion there are many cases where people used rifle or magnum primers with lower power loads and they don't seal completely and jets of gas can escape and destroy your breach face.

I've done it multiple times as well..not a problem here
