Can I use magnum large rifle primers for a .308win load?

Hey guys

Been rolling my own for a few years. Mostly .223, 6.5CM, .280ai, and .308.

I got a good deal on Federal magnum large rifle primers, so I split on a case of them with a buddy. I like them for my .280ai.

I’m running low on the cci 200 primers I use in my .308 and am having trouble getting more. Given that I have 500 magnum primers, I figured I might try working up a load with those.

Assuming I take the usual precautions (working up from minimum listed load, etc) am I likely safe to use magnum primers in a short action cartridge?

Feel free to pm me to discuss further

Thank you!

like the others said, no problems if you develop the load with that particular component. I've used CCI250 magnum primers in 308 with great results

I use magnum primers for everything.

I find them much more consistent over all and help with keeping up velocities when it's cold

Magnum powders can be particularly beneficial when using slower burning powder, or at low temperatures. But that leaves us to consider why we are running such slow burning powder in the first place. (unless its a magnum cartridge)

As a general rule, when given a choice between two closely performing loads, I will select the one with faster burning powder. It just burns cleaner and will usually work better under a wide temperature range.

As for using a magnum primer when a regular primer will do... well the load may have a pressure spike if the powder charge is not developed for the magnum primer. So I would not suggest that anyone randomly interchange the two, but as long as the load was developed for a certain primer, roll with it.

When shooting in colder conditions (outside in the winter), I try to use magnum primers in my .30-06 (.308 " dia bullet) and find that with some loads I have had more positive ignition.

99% ok. I've used magnum primers. 3006 down to .243 with no problems (( with one exception )). .243 with H450 and 100gr bullets, no matter what load I used it split cases, crushed primers. Use 200s no problems. Its pet load was imr4350 and mag primers. H450 being a ball pouder, not sure if that made the difference?

This is good info, I'm always looking to standardize on components and never thought of using LRM's in 308. I have a box of LR to use up though for the time being, so that'll be an experiment for another day.

Thanks for all the info. I just loaded up developments for two different .308 loads, with Federal Large rifle magnum primers.

I’ll see how they shoot in a couple days.
