Can i use magnum primers with .30-30

First time i will reload for my .30-30, i just got a box of bullets but forgot about getting some primers with it...:slap: i now have some on order here in town but will be a few days and i would really like to try it out with a few shots this sunday when we go to the range. Haven't shot the ol 94 in over a year! My plan was to just load up some mild starting loads like the first listed in my manual and use the magnum primers i use for my 7RM. I have a choice between CCI 250 or Federal 215. Powder will be H335, hornady 150 gr RN at about 27.5 gr as per my hornady manual. This is not a load i will keep, just so i can take the 94 out once for fun, while i wait for proper primers.
 
Some say if you are near max loads with regular primers, magnum primers can cause over pressure.
Others say that switching to magnum primers is like adding 0.5 grains of powder but there are far too many variables for this to be accurate.

I have used magnum primers in place of regular primers when in a pinch and can't get to the store or they are sold out. Never had any issues and didn't even notice a point of impact change.

Not sure why I haven't considered switching to just magnum primers for everything yet...
 
I use magnum primers for everything. Pistols along with rifle. While they are not needed in many cases, during the winter months I have had some hang fires with non mag primers. When I went to magnum problem went away. I found no point in keeping so many different types of primers. Just do a load devolvment like normal and back it off if you see any signs of pressure.
 
I wish CCI made magnum match primers.... Then I could switch to just one, instead of BR2's and 215M's.

If you are developing a load, fire away! Just don't sub mag primers into an already near max load you developed with non mag primers. It might be safe, it might not.
 
Allright thanks for the answers. I wasnt sure how much hotter mag primers really where. I guess not that much. I load some up tonight!

I have watched tests on standard and magnum primers and there is a difference, even if you don't notice it. Magnum primers can be used but if you load at max you should reduce the load, and work back up. The reduction is small, but it should be done, as every gun is different in it's pressure limits. Have fun loading it and let us know what you see, it would be nice to know !
 
So i tryied it and it was just fine, I think ill follow Ganderite advice and use mag primers for it all the time, same primers as the 7mil and same powder as the .223, keeps components easy to keep track of, works for me i like simple! The 30-30 is just my fun plinking gun anyway. I dont require anyting fancy. I just loaded it middle of the road at a nice even 30 gr and went to town. No pressure at all good accuracy. All is well
