I have a hatsun escort semi shotgun can it take slugs ?

Also if not will a norinco 97 trench take slugs ??

I need a cheap bear shotgun for my camper

Yup, rifled slugs will be fine. Sabots will work but they are expensive and not as accurate in a smooth bore unless it is a full choke. But if you cant find anything else they will work better than a sharp stick.

I have never heard of a sabot slug through full choke, only thing I have seen is keyholing through a smoothbore

It might not be a tack driver at 100 yrds but my dad has hunted with them for years and has only missed once (offhand shot turned around in a treestand lol).

He uses an old mossberg 500 with 28 full choke fixed barrel and bead sight.

Might want to pick up some challenger magnum slugs, they are a harder alloy and will penetrate much deeper than a foster slug. If you can find brenneke slugs or federal truball deep penetrator would be top choices as well

The sabots he uses, and his mossberg on the left. I remember sitting at the camp one night afger dinner and seeing the package and doing a double take. "You shoot sabots out of that??" I knew he used the same slugs for years and years and found a box at the richmond gun show a couple years ago, but i didnt realize they were sabots. It may tumble at 100yrds i have no idea but for 50yrd shots my dad says they are deadly accurate and they drop em dead.

I use challenger slugs and they are awesome. I will continue to use them as long as they make em :)

And what sabot round did he use??

Most sabot slugs are designed for rifled barrels .... and they will tumble in flight when shot out of a smooth bore ..... I only know of one sabot round that can be shot accurately out of a smooth bore .... and which is self stabilizing ....

p.s.: Ok, you beat me to it .... it is the BRI sabots .... that is the only sabot I know of that would work in a smooth bore ....

You should not put slugs through extra full/turkey chokes or shotguns with externally threaded chokes tubes. Otherwise it's fine, that is a general rule so there are minor exceptions but all in all you don't need to worry.

What should I try and find all my local shops are picked clean

Get some Challenger slugs. They are a proven design that has enough power and penetration for the largest bears ...

It seems Reliable Gun has some in stock ....

And if I were you I would order those quickly before they are sold out as well.
Quality slugs are hard to find right now .... the market has dried up.

If you haven't bought the gun yet, I would suggest a short Hatsan semi. If you're wanting this for 'bears' or any other use, the semi is a better bet. You may not get to pump if you're surprised in the woods. There are Turkish semis under $400 around here - pumps around $250-300. I saw a YT video of a Slug test that showed the Fed TruBall to have the best penetration and retention. Here's a link : http s://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAq5jNBrRbw. May be better than Brenneke, which are hard to find anyway.
Good luck,
Ed

Have been shooting slug through a couple barrels with externally threaded chokes for years, no damage has been done to either of them.

I was going to ask about that. I've never heard that one before. X-full etc yeah, but I've never seen mention of externally threaded chokes one way or the other..?

Hogwash. A cheap pump gun is far more reliable than a cheap semi. Either should be thoroughly tested before trusting one's life to it though.

3" slugs also have the potential to beat the crap out of your gun. I know I don't like the way my semi Turkish gun recoils with 3" slugs, whereas through my pump I don't mind. (nor do I mind 3" steel shot loads in my semi, that's mostly what I feed it)

That is advice given by certain manufacturers, just repeating it. You did cut my caveat BTW... I know my Fabarm shotguns were marked ok for slugs and steel shot despite the external threading. My 14" gun had at least 3000 slugs plus many times that with bird/buck and the threading was as tight as new.

Just keep in mind guys, that not all slugs can be safely fired through a constriction.

Some slugs are designed for cylinder bore only!!

And I will just give one example here .... the DGS Thunderbolt.

I’ve never heard any manufacturers say that but there less externally threaded barrels on the market than regular internally threaded barrels.

I too have a Fabarm as well as an NEA 870 barrel that are externally threaded, trying to find a gunsmith to thread externally was next to impossible when I wanted a 12.5” grizzly barrel threaded. It just isn’t that common up here, where as in the USA the popularity of Saiga 12g and their muzzle devices makes it more of a common thing. My NEA barrel has a Saiga adaptor that takes Winchokes.
