I have an Ithaca Model 37 for which I have a rifled barrel. If one were to consider it for a home defence firearm, would the rifling be damaged by using say No. 4 shot or 00 buckshot? The barrel is shorter than the standard smooth bore it came with.

Lead is a lot softer then your steel barrel so no it will not do any damage to your barrel. It will get dirty and the groves will fill with the soft lead but that can be cleaned out with a brass brush and some lead out solvent. It is better to keep it clean then to let it build up you will get some plastic building up from the wad as well . Dutch

By home defence are you talking human intruders? Even if you are talking critters, how much home defence shooting you plan on doing to worry about damaging the barrel? Plus you use it once on an intruder and the possibility of a damaged barrel is the least of your worries.

I have no plans to use it for that purpose but with the way the world is going these days, and Canada's efforts to import potential terrorists, one would be wise to at least be prepared. Did we ever think that the Khadr family would get the notoriety they have and the fellas from london that travelled to north africa, the incidents in Ottawa, Quebec and the maritimes and lastly the fellas on the train would arise in Canada?
The escalations in the middle east these past few days kind of suggest that matters worldwide are getting out of hand. The brutality of moslem nations in the middle east is quite incredible.

If you actually think about it you stand a better chance in dieing from a freak ladder accident then you do from a terrorist but if peace of mind is all you seek any trusted firearm will do

Shot out of a rifled barrel will spread very quickly. A plastic shot cup will make it spread even faster. The shot column is spinning as it exits the barrel so the rotational momentum makes the pattern expand quickly. The shot won't hurt the barrel. Shot in a plastic shot cup won't even lead the barrel- but you may get plastic build up like a sabot would leave.
