Im confused on how ATTs work. I know you have to apply for a long term ATT through the CFO, and that can take a week or two.

But what I am confused on, is the short term ATT to bring a newly purchased pistol from the STORE to your HOUSE instant? i.e. do you have to wait for it after you buy the gun? Also how do you apply for this? Or is it done automatically when the gun is purchased?

thanks.

From what I understand, Everytimr you purchase a restricted firearm, you pay for it and soon get a call from your CFO/ the CFC. You do another interview regarding why you are buying the firearm and they will issue you a short term ATT. This ATT allows you to bring it from the store to your residence only. After that you need to have a LTATT. Best way to do this is when they phone you regarding the Short Term ATT is to ask for them to get started on the LTATT as well.

There's also a sticky topic about ATTs if you are still confused.

Long term is sent in the mail, I don't remember the initial waiting period but it wasn't that long.
When I make a restricted transaction my updated long term usually arrives within 3 days.

Here is how it went last pistol I purchased from a store;
Note, I already had my LTATT
Went to gunb store, paid for gun at 10 am
Went back to work
Gun store called---gun and Statt good to go
3pm, picked up gun on my way home
1 wk later reg cert arrived making it legal to transport according to terms of my LTATT
spent grocery money on ammo and new holster

The following is the procedure for Ontario residents, other provinces may vary.

Sort term ATT
  • You purchase your firearm from the gun shop.
  • The gun shop asks for the name of your gun club, where will the firearm be stored and the city you were born in. The city question is a security question that the CFO will want.
  • The gun shop calls the CFO's office and provides them your information and the firearms description.
  • The CFO does a background check on you and if everything is OK your firearm is registered to you and they will fax the short term ATT to the gun shop. This will take anywhere from 3 hours to 3 days. The short term ATT is typically valid for 30 days. If this is your FIRST restricted firearm this COULD take up to a week.
  • You pickup your firearm and take it directly home.
  • The firearm registration certificate will arrive at your home in 1 or 2 weeks.
  • If you purchased your firearm from a private individual the processing time is typically much longer, sometimes it can take weeks.

Long Term ATT
  • You ask your club to apply for a long term ATT on your behalf.
  • The club makes the call to the CFO's office.
  • The long term ATT is mailed to your club - this can be as little as 3 days.
  • You pickup your long term ATT at your club.

I hope this clarifies some of the confusion here.

Perfectly clear. You jump through hoops to get a RPAL licence.

You buy a gun and you cant take it home until you jump through hoops.

Once you get it home you can't shoot it until you jump through hoops.

Repeat as many times as you can stand.

.

Thanks for all the answers.

atticus, I think the range membership is only needed to get ATT to leave the home, not to purchase and take home a restricted.

You buy an antique 6 shooter revolver. No hoops. Load and shoot anywhere a non restricted can be shot. No need for any pal, no registration. It's not considered a firearm. :D
