Can someone explain any major difference between these two Vortex Scopes?

Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16X44 FFP EBR-2C sits ~$500

Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44, VMR-1 sits ~$880

The cheaper of the two boasts a FFP reticle. Other differences include .2 inch longer eye relief, a few grams lighter, 1ft wider FOV at any magnification and a hair shorter all in favour of the pricier scope.
But... What on earth makes these two optics $380s different from one another? Same magnification, same tube size (30mm), same objective lens (44mm).
Is it really those tiny incremental improvements, or is it boasting clearer glass for that price tag?

Go to the store nd look through both optics - you will see the difference. The quality of the glass and the coatings should make the more expensive scope the better view. At the small shop I worked at, I did this comparison with many customers, outside the store where you can really see the difference. This kind of comparison is even better when comparing two scopes of same price point but from different companies.. .

The vortex diamondback tactical are popular because of the price point but the clarity on them are crap. Once you start to zoom in, it drops off fast. I looked through a 6-24 diamondback tactical at the gun range, once past 12x it was horrendous. I got a 6-24 bushnell elite (Japan) with 1/8 adjustments and at 24x it is crisp with no reticle shake.

I’ve got a 4-16 Diamondback. Meh, I would get the Venom next time. $699. Also, I would rather a 3-15 or 18. Only time I use 25X is sight in and ammo testing.

If you like Vortex, take a look at the Venom and Strike eagle... 34mm tubes, 10mil/revolution turrets EBR-7C reticle.

But the first thing you need to know is what type of shooting you will be doing... that will dictate the scope you get.

Wow! I have purchased 6 Vortex scopes (3 Vipers) and never had an issue with any of them. What the he11 was wrong with them?

Cheers

the first one would not hold zero. I spent about $100 in ammo trying to figure that out.
the second one had what looked like large grease or oil spots on the inside of the tube (visible through the objective lens when lighted with a flashlight)
the third had scratches on the inside of the tube (visible as well) and little grains of the "scratched" material that moved around.

The store owner was not impressed either.

I had to return one Viper Gen1 for replacement. After 900 rounds of 50BMG the elevation turret came loose. I think it would have lasted a lifetime on a .308

It might not have been the .50 bmg rounds. I had a 4-16x44 HS LR on my .17 and the top turret was loosely floating around a hard rifle case when I opened it one day. It wasn't dropped.

We had a flood about 6 months ago and that one died in the flood. I sent it in and they sent me back a 4-16x44 HS (no LR) scope and to be honest, I never needed to adjust the turrets on the fly with the BDC reticle, so I appreciate it being simpler and 3 oz lighter.

Well, I can't say for sure what the cause was but I know I saw it flop off loose while shooting. The scope was still zero'd though. It would still hit where aimed. But just no way to make elevation adjustments. :)
