I learned the same lesson about shooting at steel plates with my .416 when a 350 gr X bullet turned inside out came screaming back and landed on the firing line a couple of yards away. That bullet looked like a thimble with the rifling grooves on the inside. It seems that steel plates are safer to shoot at when suspended on chains rather than when they are set on the ground, but I'm done shooting big rifles at steel.

They should be suspended on a chain, angled to deflect down (slightly) and shrouded.
Not less than 100 yards, and for heavier stuff at least 300 yards.
I have shot a lot of gongs, but the ones on our range are set up as described, nothing has ever come back, it all goes into the ground. The combination of the swinging action on the chain and the slight downward cant ensures this

"Ban 50's" wow I instantly hate you...... Like any rifle all that is needed is common sense... You don't shoot at steel or rocks from that distance. That's a paper into a hill only distance.... Fare enough... but there was no hints of sarcasm in those statements, so it seemed they were serious... My statement defiantly sounds really serious now that I read it again... I guess i should have put a few of these in there...
