I recall having seen a rifle like that. It was marked AEL or something like that and was apparently used in the canadian aircrafts as safety weapon. Does it ring a bell to someone?
Lots of stuff went on during the war that would give the Regs excrement fits, then and now. If that guy is RCEME(can't make out the shoulder flash in the picture), he's lost. RCEME guys were REMFs(my Da was RCEME attached to 2nd Armour). Rarely armed and not anywhere near the front lines.
No Rangers in W.W. II.
True that. There were plenty of instances of weird equipment used by all armies in WW2. I recently read an account from one of Monty's staff officers in Italy after watching a Canadian infantry attack go in near Ortona. The officer said Monty thought the Canadians attacked in fine style but complained on their "irregular dress". The officer claimed they were passed by Canadian soldiers, one sporting a bowler hat and another wearing a hockey jersey with FLIN FLON written on the front.

Hilarious...any idea of what/where is a FLIN FLON?
That's a hoot considering how Monty practically made up his "uniform" based on what he felt like each day.
