please, with a highlighted photograph, what the TANG and the RECOIL LUG are? Preferrably on a Savage with an internal box magazine.

I just bought a BTVSS .223 and am familiarizing myself (a certified N00B) as completely as possible with the gun before taking further accurizing measures. I did have the action out of the stock last night to adjust the Accutrigger.

It's my understanding that the TANG should be floated (?) and I forget what I'm looking for around the RECOIL LUG :runaway: :(

Thanks in advance.

EDIT... Also, I understand that one of the action screws should be tight and the other only just snug. I forget which, front and rear. It seems to me the rear should be tight as the pressure of the magazine spring might tend to make the action jump around in the stock if that screw's not fairly firmly tightened.

The tang is the rear of the receiver, under the bolt, on a Savage it will be where the safety is. The recoil lug is on the front bottom of the receiver, a flat piece of metal that sticks downward. The front screw is the one that should be tighter, not the rear, but it's only 64 INCH POUNDS or so for the front, half that for the rear. These are rough numbers only. - dan

#1 is the recoil lug. #2 is the tang. Not the best pic, but it works....front action screw should be tight, rear tightened, then backed off half a turn. If you completely tighten the rear, you chance springing the action which leads to in-accuracy.....

If the rifle is bedded properly, tighten both screws to the same torque. About 55-60 inch pounds works in most cases. If your are springing the action by tightening it in the stock you have a bedding issue.
