Can someone tell me what flew off my Enfield?

I was showing my buddy (a non shooter) how the SMLE action worked, worked the action, dry fired and this flew off and hit him in the head.

It actually came off in two parts on two dry firings. Anyone know what it is, and what I need to do to fix it? I can't even see where these pieces would have come from. You can see that it's broken and I've tried to set it up best as I can tell the way it was before it failed.

That's your extractor spring.

Simple to replace and easily available.

Lucky his head was there to cushion the blow, thus saving it damage.

Good thing it happened at home...if it was the range or bush you would never find it in the gravel and weeds.

Thanks, gents. Just ordered a new one from Tradex.
Yeah, it was kind of funny because the first piece hit the top of his head. He said something came off but I thought he imagined it, did it again and it the other half landed on the hardwood!
