The only reason Armalite went to a M14 pattern magazine with the AR10B was, at the time the rifle was introduced it was right after the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 came into effect, it was illegal to produce large capacity magazine for assault rifles and since M14 didn't have a barrel shroud or a pistol grip to be classified as an assault rifle so the magazine wasn't restricted.
