Can you "blacken" stainless steel?

Let me try this again, black oxide.

It's a chemical conversion process much like parkerizing or bluing and is the only option for stainless that I'm aware of unless you go with a coating.

Find someone who can black nitride the surface. Corrosion resistance (though moot in a stainless action) and super high surface hardness (between 64 to 71 Rc). Supposedly black nitride is three times more effective than hard chrome and only adds (or penetrates, cant remember) only .001 in".
 
I have a factory Remington from the 60's that has a stainless barrel. It certainly looks blued, and not painted. Anyone have any idea how Remington does that?
