i just wondering it you can do that, some people tell me you can do it, and other people tell me they wont do it. just wondering if anyone try it before.

I don't think there are any exceptions to the rule that shorter shells are always safe. I can't claim to be an expert on this, though, so I'd be very interested to hear if the answer is otherwise.

I don't see why not in a gun in safe condition. Where would you find 2-5/8" slugs, anyway?

Are you measusing the round before firing and calling it 2 5/8"?

The length of a shot shell is the length, AFTER it has been fired. The chamber has to be long enough to acomodate the crimped over case, after it opens up.

2 5/8" might be the lenght of an unfied 3" shell. You CANNOT shoot a 3" in a 23/5" chamber.

never heard of a 2 5/8" shell, so wondering where you got that number from.

Yes of course. In fact, a very few guns will reliably feed very short shells, like the winchester 1300, but not any mossbergs or remingtons I`ve tried. It`s a cheaper model but popular, and feeds everything, surprisingly. I actually cut the plastic off an empty high brass hull, and if fed that, from the mag.

Most pumps and semi`s won`t reliably feed those gimmicky shells like the aguila mini shells though, so you have to feed through the receiver.

It may be a hazard if the shotgun has interchangeable chokes or if the slugs are the saboted type. We have a split barrel that we use for instruction that had fired a saboted slug. Many saboted slugs are steel and do not obturate to the bore as a lead slug does. The shorter cartridge should make no difference as long as the dimensions are measured in the same state - both fired.

on the box wrote special slug sport, and is sellier & bellot brand. on gauge 12X2 5/8, load 1oz shot slug, that is all the information on the box seeing to be important

i use those. great slugs. very accurate. i like S&B ammo. it says that on the box but they must measure different over there because if you hold it up beside a 2 3/4 shell they are identical length. never had a misfeed or a problem in any pump, falling block, or semi i've shot them in. and $15 for 25 slugs they're the best deal out there. also i don't believe there is a slug made out of steel. there would be no need or benefit from such a thing. most saboted slugs are copped jacketed lead bullets or pure copper. no steel. plus saying it won't obturate doesn't work as slugs are undersized to the bore and the skirt flares out to make the seal like a mini-ball. steel wouldn't do that so they can't use it except in a sabot but ballistics would be horrible

The 2 and 5/8th inch shell is an old timer. The very earliest Winchester M1897's chambered this particular shell if I recall correctly. Some other older 12ga.'s had this length chambering as well. I find it unfortunate S&B designates what he know to be a 2 and 3/4 inch shell a 2 and 5/8th inch shell. It would not be advisable to shoot such a share in an older 12ga. chambered for the shorter shell.
