Hi everyone, I want to start doing some action games and I want to go with a chest rig rather than a battle belt/shooting belt.

I'm looking for something on the lower price spectrum, less than $100 preferably. I would like it to have 4 AR-15 mag pouches and at least 3 pistol pouches. In addition, and this is more like a nice to have, some options for additional addons later on.

If you're on a budget you really shouldn't be blowing money on a non-optimal setup. Get a belt, get pouches/holders and start out right.

Initially I was going to go with a belt, but then I quickly found out that the cost can spiral out of control, especially when starting to add all the pouches on it. A decent 1.5"-2" belt is around $50-70 and the pouches add up quickly. To top it off, putting all those mag pouches on a belt seemed very crowded to me.

If you have any advice on a good setup I'm definitely open for suggestions. I want something that's comfortable, and won't end up costing me an arm and a leg.

Battle belt setup is definitely better than chest rig, I was using a chest rig for the longest time and I don`t miss it. M14 mags are huge so chest rig might be the only way.

So do you wanna add the $100 cost of a junk chest rig to the spiralling costs or do you wanna get the right rig immediately?

As for suggestions... I'm running a 2" duty belt that I got from Tetragon:

The inner belt is another $15 to a grand total of $40:

Mag pouches are a personal preference. You can get away with cheaping out a bit and getting the Bladetech doubles. Also no issues with Bladetech mag pouches.. You can get the Bladetech goodies from Select Shooting Supplies.

My experience here is limited. . I have two belts set up right now. For an IPSC style rig I'm using 100% Ghost products and it was a little pricey but is rock solid! I'm going to be adding rifle pouches and shot she'll carriers for 3 gun since the HSGI battle belt i have is not very sturdy, it moves every time I draw my pistol or pull a mag at any kind of angle. With a drop leg holster it might be a little sturdier but I'm tired of the bulk.

Originally I looked at going the chest rig route but the price was so close that it wasn't worth it. My other concern was the cross draw holster. I did not want to get called for sweeping so I would have gone to a belt mounted holster anyways, adding to the cost of the rig.

Just my 2 cents, buy once.. cry once..

There are simple chest rigs from Maxpedition, Eagle and SOE Gear. I have a version of the Eagle 'Universal Tactical Chest Rig' which works with any Magazine (M-14, VZ58, AR) although it is a bit of overkill. I concur witht he above posters that a belt is faster and more customizable.

Fifty bucks.

If you're determined to go with the chest rig look into the HSGI AO package. It is a great set up and small and light. I also have a full battle belt from HSGI, but I can't recommend it for competition. There is no innner belt and feels too loose and slows the draw. Saying that though, the HSGI stuff with TACOs are great, I won't sell them yet as I do use them for other endeavors. I would bite the bullet and go with a competition belt set-up. Do a little homework and do it right the first time, there's lots of choices out there.
