I don't know many of the details, but I have a chance to buy a Longbranch No.4 Mk.1 still in the grease. The current owner bought it wrapped, took it out of the wrap but never really got to fully degreasing it. He said the butt has a fews dents but the rest is ecvellent.

I would imagine this is an FTR no? Is there anty possibility it is an unissued LB?

I am going to ask for pics. He is asking $500 picked up.

What do you guys think? Let's assume it IS just an FTR.

So you think even if it is an FTR, it would be worth the $500, even with a few dents in the butt stock?
 
Districorp did import some as new LBs from Belgium. Think they even had some with consecutive serials. One of these rifles would certainly be worth $500.

I emailed the guy tonight, so I should know a lot more details in the next day or two.
 
I forgot to ask.... on a Longbranch.... where would it say if it had been FTR'ed? Would it be marked on the left side of the receiver or on the metal strap?

I remember the 1950 LBs that came in this way back in the early 90s but I thought CAI in Montreal brought them in. Came in beige painted crates with a red maple leaf on them IIRC.

May well be. I remember Districorp selling them, but they may not have been the importer.
 
I was expecting a reply today, but he must have been busy. Ill report back as soon as I hear more.

Anything you guys would recommend I look for when looking at this longbranch? Are there certain years of LB's that are more desirable for a certain reason? If the LB factory did not mark their FTR's how would I be able to tell if this LB rifle is unissued, or FTR'ed?

Canadian "FTR"s do NOT say FTR on them. About the only way to tell is experience, and sometime that doesn't tell you exactly what you are looking at either.

Quick & Dirty: Any LB No4 which is dated before 1950 and has a parkerized finish is possibly a Canadian FTR.


LB started parkerizing part way thru 1950 dated No4s.

From your limited description, it could well be Arsenal new, FTR or Long term storage (ie. war stores). FTR or Storage could have been anywhere, tho the markings or lack of them do tell their own story.

I'd say, if it looks nice, buy it. Forget the story.
