Hard chroming is not a "dress-up" option, its a industrial surface treatment for toughness. Not particularly pretty. They don't usually hard chrome for looks... Hard chrome goes in the barrel, nickel-chrome goes on the barrel
This is another old war horse of mine, it is a S&W M1917 in 45acp. This pistol was hard chromed in about 1989 and it has given yeoman's service since that. You cannot believe how easy it is to clean a hard chromed handgun. Regards, Richard

Hard chroming is a popular "finish" for guns due to its toughness and corrosion resistance. It is more of a functional finish as opposed to a fancy finish. But it is quite common nonetheless.
