Can you help me on a budget single shot?

I wanted a cheaper camp shotgun to keep around camp and decided under 200 bucks felt right.

I don't know anything about either of these but the price is right and I imagine both are from turkey. Which would you pick or if you have another suggestion I'd love to hear it.

CHARLES DALY 101 SINGLE BARREL 12 GA $179.99 CAD

Revolution Armory SB2S 12 ga $159.99 CAD

Both fold up completely into small backpack friendly sizes. SB2S had a hammer to ####, the Daly has a forward of trigger mechanism.

I would bump the budget to $300 and get a Mossberg Maverick 88. I have a Turkish single shot, and it works, but the trigger is heavy and I rarely use it anymore. You can lighten the trigger on mine but then you run the risk of light primer strikes.

Personally I find the quick follow up available with a pump gun to outweigh any advantage the compactness of a single shot provides. I thought the single shot would be the perfect truck gun, but grouse are often in groups where I hunt so the pump rides up front most days at this point. If I didn't have a 410 adapter and kids my single shot would be for sale.

Otherwise if you are dead set on a single shot, I'd look on the EE, lots of stuff there. I bought an h&r for like $100 last year or the year before, and while it doesn't have threaded chokes or a 3" chamber it feels like it's better quality than my Turkish one.

For that price range, I'd probably scoop up an old Cooey 840 in good shape off the EE. Probably be a better gun all around.

Usually lots of singles on the EE. Can't go wrong with a Cooey, Iver Johnson etc. If you save a little more you could check Intersurplus for a side by side between $200 to $300.

I've got a pump already and if I'm honest just had 200 bucks to spend on a toy. Light strikes don't sound fun, maybe I'll just save up to get a side by side I've always wanted anyway. Thanks.

Yeah I'd just save up a bit if you always wanted a SxS. $200 isn't that far off an older SxS coming out of Europe from some of the dealers. Frontier has a handful for under $300 right now, i don't know enough about those guns to say if they're worth buying but it gives you a starting point to research from. Intersurplus would be another worth looking at. (They've got a banner ad at the top)

I have a Federation Arms single shot in 20" barrel. Great gun, I hunted all last year with it. Deadly on grouse with minishells.

You would only get light primer strikes if you loosen the tension on the hammer spring off too much, easy to adjust back again. I just cut some target shells open, so I have an empty shell with primer and try them in the garage until I get it in the sweet spot.

Hard to beat a nice condition Cooey 84, priced well and they’re a great single shot to walk the bush with.

For sure. They definitely are quality compared to a lot of the single shot modern offerings. I inherited a Remington Model 812 in 28 gauge from my Mom when she died so that's the only single shot shotgun that I own and use at present. But I wouldn't recommend one, as the plastic parts on them are fragile and will break as the years go by. I bought a spare to cannibalize to keep my Mom's gun going. But the Cooey 84's and 840's don't have any plastic on them and will keep on chugging away for most guys for a lot of years to come. Hard to go wrong with one.

Stevens 301 can be found on sale for $179 for the base black synthetic and they're threaded for chokes. Break down fast and easy. The finish seems like a cheap parkerizing but a good cost of oil and few wipe downs smoothes it out
2nd to that would be a Baikal ij18 if you want hammerless

Yeah I thought I had it right until I had a different shell on hand and it didn't go off... probably shot 30 or 40 shells at grouse and clays before I missed a grouse over it. I ended up with a security barrel for my pump and the single shots compactness was no longer a big enough feature for me. And at least for me, cycling a pump for a second shot is more intuitive than cocking the hammer on a single. Ymmv of course, I did love my single shot for a while...

Camp gun should have the ability to shoot more than one round quickly.

Them old Cooeys are great for shoot'in feathers one at a time.

But I suppose any ker-pow on hand is better'n naddah.

I picked up a used Maverick couple years back with the three butt samples.
Not a bad gig for what it is.

I left the regular stock on it.
Made more sense to me than using the pistol grip or knife handle using 3" ammo.
