can you ID this hull?

ok well from the title you probly expecting somthing rare. well its not, i dont think i got 250rounds of it.

i have been looking for federal goldmetal hulls to aid in my slug reloading endevor. then it dawned on me maby in my stock pile i have some live ammo.
well from the pictures and posts i can find these rounds apear to be in goldmetal hulls but dont say it.

the hull is:
2 3/4"
federal red
medium hight brass
6 star crimp
head stamp 12(duck inbetween)GA, below that "made in usa"

box reads:
Federal steel classic magnum
12ga 1 1/4oz #3 3 1/2 dram EQ

i am new to this. could some one please tell me i have 250 rounds that i need to blow so i have hulls.:dancingbanana:
 
No gold medal hulls there, 6 point crimp and loaded with steel are normally just crapy federals similiar to top gun etc.Not worth even reloading with steel in my opinion other than 10ga ones. Sorry
Would need to see a cut away pic to be 100% but I cannot recall even the early federals which these are using the GM design.Definately don't today
 
Federal gold medal plastic hulls have "gold medal" stamped on the head.

What you have could be either the federal paper basewad hull(not ideal but still loadable) or the 0.090" basewad hull(great for slug/buck loads); the paper ones will be obvious, the 0.090" base hulls will have the "primer nipple" poking well above the bottom of the case.

UPDATE:
i halved the hulls and they are 1peice plastic. the plastic is raised up around the primer pocket. also the casing is ribbed if that makes a differance

Most do but not all of them it depends on the vintage. Here are three GM examples, all are ribbed case, plastic base and 8 point, left and right were reloaded so show winchester primer
left says 12ga gold metal small letters with duck symbol
middle federal 12ga
right federal gold metal big letters 12ga no duck

my hulls head stamp look exactly like the one on the left except ware it had "goldmetal" mine say "made in usa". i tryed to take pics but i cant get my camera to focus up to it.
 
ok from what i gather a goldmetal hull is on the left. and the hull on the right has a bace wad that looks like what i have.

Hard to see in the picks but two different hulls to me. Look at the height difference alone in the base wads they are not the same. That alone would require different reloading data.Thought you said they were loaded with steel shot?? Right one wasn't cannot see but looks like 7 1/2 lead on the left one??.
If indeed that is a gold metal on the left and your hulls are like the right then they are not the same internally as gold metal hulls and would require a different reloading data

It has one of the largest case capacities of any production 12ga hull. It will allow for more powder, and velocity while maintaining safe pressures.

OP- I would use the 9 pellet 00 buck data asking for 40gr of hs-6, instead of buckshot, I'd put a 1oz slug.

Before anyone flames me for talking about swapping data, I load 1oz slugs with the exact same load(Same primer, wad, charge weight, powder) in a federal GM hull. Except, in a GM hull, this load generates 11000PSI. The buckshot data for the .090" hulls entail a 1-1/8oz load with only 8000PSI. By using a 1oz slug, you would be lowering the pressures more. So in my opinion, it is a safe substitution; as with unpublished data, use at your own risk.

Thanks for the feedback. Makes perfect sense what you are saying. One thing I don't load is slugs just don't use enough to justify. Buckshot every now and then as the stock pile gets low but mostly 10ga.
