can you store your pistol with the slide locked back for any extended time?

Just keep a loaded mag nearby, pop it in and a quick rack of the slide makes it lethal. Dont see why you would need to store it with the action locked open.

From my understanding if the gun is locked in a safe a loaded mag in the same safe is acceptable.

Why do you store it like that? What's the benefit? For home defence, so you can quick load a mag?

I check to see if my firearms are loaded every time I handle them. It just makes things easier.

Yes, as long as it isn't in the gun.

The coil springs in vehicles are always under some compression at rest and seem to last quite awhile.

The same can be said for most firearm coil springs as well. Good quality springs do not lose strength from being compressed within their design operating range.
