Can you tell me what kind of Mauser this is?

My comments were meant to encourage the buyer who got plucked by a dishonest seller.

In his place I would ask for a full refund.

On the other hand; when I bought my first Garand at the Montreal (Longueil) gun show 25 years ago, I paid $450.00 which was $200.00 over the going price for a Garand at that time.
Look where the prices are today, even for mixmasters.

BTW I bought that Garand being fully aware of the prices; the rifle was beautiful, all matching with tiger stripped walnut furniture.
I sold it to buy another toy, which I sold to buy something else, don't remember.

As our government continues to legislate the existence of various classes of firearms away whether thru outright bans, buybacks, grandfathering or any other crazy schemes they come up with.....I can only see "bolt action" milsurp prices continue to rise steadily as they most likely will remain free from the gov't firearm purge at least for the foreseeable future.
Sorry for being "slightly off topic.

Russian captures are less messed with then this gun, at least most marking on an RC are Original wartime. Yes, hot dipped and mismatched but this gun has been rebarrelled, scrubbed, renumbered, reblued, post war stock. Even if prices go up, this will never be what the OP wanted it to be.

And half of the guns values these days is inflation. No one can get #### all for a dollar these days. I’m young and I’ve seen a 600ml bottle of pop go from .99cents to $2.79 for 500ml. Lol and cigarettes go from $3.99 to $20!

should be $40 plus,
and this has nothing to do with inflation

Quitting smoking's easy I've done it a thousand times!

But back on topic... Sorry to hear about this ordeal the OP has had to deal with. That sucks. I know what it's like to really want that cool milsurp rifle for your collection - I'd be pissed of I got duped. Def see about a refund. Or maybe you can sell it as a parts gun? You'll take a loss but can maybe buy a Russian Capture K98k with what you recover from the sale. They are great rifles. I have a 1937 S/42 russian capture. Great guns but have even been starting to see them listed for $1600 or $1700 now. It's crazy.

Really my entire point is, the gun isn’t what it he wanted it to be. And it will never be that. I actually don’t care if it ends up worth $5000 it’s not a matching German 98k which is what the OP was buying.

VolkSturm33, Just to show you how easy it is to get duped on a rifle, about 3 years ago I bought a lovely heavy wall, small receiver Martini, built by BSA for a commercial target rifle.

When I bought it, the fellow told me it was chambered for 218 Bee, a cartridge that always intrigued me. He also told me the bore wasn't good and accuracy was terrible.

Fine, I like a challenge.

Well guess what. The chamber is for a 22 Hornet and the barrel is fine, other than that there are a bunch of holes drilled in it, under the fore end, for the original sights and scope blocks.

I'm going to take it out, when it warms up, to see how it shoots. I don't think it will, as the barrel has a 220 bore diameter.

Luckily I have a couple of 224 diameter, heavy profile take off barrels in my barrel bin. So, I will be doing what I was prepared to do when I purchased the rifle.

Looking back, I know the fellow I purchased it from had picked it up to flip it. He even threw in a box of once fired cases, which can be rare as hen's teeth. I found more at Prophet River but they weren't cheap by the time the shipping was in. In hind sight, I should have bought both boxes, but a hundred cases will suffice for now.

Just what I needed, another project. The thing is, I really like Martini actions and the rifles built on them. So it's going to be a fun project, rather than a chore.
