Well, it looks very similar to the 1940 Model 91/38 Carcano Short Rifle (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=115, which was posted (thanks to Skippy) in the Italy - Milsurp Knowledge Library (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23

I know very little about Carcanos, however, looking at the library pics, there are several differences to the fore-end upper and lower band retention scheme and also the sling swivels are on the left side, like a K98k mauser would be.

The sight looks different as well.... could this be a long rifle that was chopped down?

It is a Mannlicher-Carcano Model 1891TS Carbine in 6.5 carcano. TS stands for Truppe Speciale (Special Troups).

Given the rifle rear sight and conventional nosecap, wouldn't it more likely be an M91/24 or M91/28 TS Carbine?
