can you use a .223 to hunt deer.

What you meant to say was that BG cartridges start at 25cal, right? :)
.

There isn't much walking around in North America that a .257" 120 gr bullet at two and a half times the speed of sound won't kill with a single shot. But I think a 6.5 due to it's 160 gr bullet can kill the rest, so that makes the 6.5 the minimum general purpose hunting round for North America . . . IMHO of course.

A centerfire .22 will kill a deer within it's limitations as will the .243 within it's limitations. After killing more than a few mature northern whitetail & muley bucks that easily push the 300lb mark on the hoof, I've come to rely on more robust cartridges. When a good sized buck appears at over 250 yards across a field during November, late in the day and heading for the bush, I don't think it's time to piss around with puny calibers. My personal minimum is a .270WCF. A lot of the guys around this country use their .300 Magnums and there ain't many flies in that ointment either.

Wrong.

The role of infantry:

"...to close with and DESTROY the enemy"

The 12 years I spent with the CF were certainly not punctuated by a doctrine that promoted "wounding".

Perhaps you were a member before the 5.56 was in use. I was trained on the FN over 20 years ago, and they most certainly told us that incapacitating an enemy was even better than a bang-flop. They stress it even more now that the 7.62 is not the standard battle rifle cartridge.

So did I. No one of importance ever told us incapacitating was better. We shot for center of mass, whether that be torso, ass, foot as the target presents itself. Wounding was better than not hitting at all, but sending someone home in a bag is far more demoralizing (at least in western culture) than sending one home wounded.

We can argue this again when the new .223 thread emerges in 10-14 days.:slap:
