Canada geese decoys

Hey CGN,

Looking for advise on buying decoys. I will be hunting a corn field. Looking to buy a dozen or so decoys to get started. I know that this a weird statement but I am looking to buy some and if there is a cheap option that works and where to get them that would be awesome. But also if a far superior versions is not that much more i would rather cry once buy once.

I like the real geese silhouettes.... They seem to work well for me. They are light weight making them easy to transport, store and setup... Might be a little bit of money for them but have found them very useful over the many years I have owned them.

It's getting tough to get decoys and related gear in retail stores and going to get tougher and prices are soaring! Buy it as soon as you see it. If you only need a dozen then get as realistic as possible and buy full bodies. Avian X are the top of the game imo. GHG are nice too. Check kijiji too, there is always used ones for sale on there.
 
We started out with flocked head ghg shells which did us well and we continue to use with our high end full bodies. If I were to start over again I would go with dive bomb silhouettes at $300 USD for 5 doz decoys it's a good setup to start out with that can be a whole spread on it's own without needing new decoys for quite a while.
 
I have found that for what you are looking for there are 3 options.

Go super realistic like a full body type of setup, spend the big dollars.

Go for some used decoys that are reasonable cost (might even get more that way)

Go for silhouettes, which for the same amount of space as the full body option you could get 4 dozen (and cost is likely similar also)

For silos I like the big als as they have steel stakes and go in hard or slightly frozen ground better.

We started with 15 or 16 shells and then my son found out about the dive bomb silhouettes. We got 5 dozen of them and have been very happy with them. We just recently purchased 5 dozen of their mallard silhouettes. 5 dozen silos fit in a carry bag that is about 2 feet square and 10 inches deep. That is easy to carry.
 
Serious waterfowlers are like any other sporting affliction and feel the need to constantly upgrade. Buy used, chances are the geese don’t care.
 
A dozen full bodies is about 400-600$, I bought 5doz Divebomb silhouettes for about $700. Last season. Best investment I've bought, so much easier setting up(I can carry 2doz at a time)
 
You can some great used deals during the off season. I found a guy that had his garage full of full bodies and silhouettes, he wanted $200 just to get rid of them as he quit hunting...had thousands invested in them. There are some wicked deals out there. I have bought lots of duck decoys new...they are pricey vs used.
 
Divebomb decoys are light and inexpensive compared to many brands but they are far from hardy. I hunt almost every day of the season. My partner does too and just sold his entire spread of divebombs(20 doz canadas, 20 doz mallards and 20 doz snows) as they are not tough and their "full replacement warranty" ain't worth the paper they print it on. When you hunt lots and shoot alot of birds as we do you will find put how poor quality their product is. He lost at least 5-6 decoys a season to birds falling dead on them smashing them to pieces or breaking them in half when a bird bounced off the ground and hit them. The stakes bend easily trying to get them in dry hard ground. In ideal conditions they are quick to set up and they do work, we shot lots of birds over them but he decided this year that was enough of them when they would not replace the broken ones as they advertise because they do not have a Canadian distributor and did not want to ship replacements to Canada. He is back to using only his fb spread(which an outfitter would be envious of) from here on in...if going silos go with real-geese. They are more $ but tough as nails!!

I can see how a falling goose could destroy a silhouette, especially if it was very cold out.
 
Your question depends on the location and style of goose hunting that you want to do.
For locally produced Greater Canadas, a dozen decoys is a reasonable spread. Which brand or style decoys you use is not as important as exactly where and in what field you place them. If you get the pre-scouting done right, a dozen decent shell decoys is all you need.
If you are trying to lure fly-by arctic nesting migrators, ( lesser Canadas, specs, or snows) a big spread of decoys is much more effective. Then cheap silhouettes and multiple dozens help a lot.
