Hey guys

I'm about to buy a Canada Goose..down parka.
Many years ago, I wore a friends and it was absolutely awesome. The one I am considering buying feels just right.

Back home in Newfoundland, the wet winters and moderately warm winters would see this type jacket as almost useless..but up in the peace country it is well served.

My new job has me on the road a lot, so I'd really like a good warm jacket to wear this winter and be able to suffice ahould an emergency arise...(flat tire, ditch, etc) I always have my survival suit in the trunk, but it's not really want you what you'd want to waer to work, and so on...

Any advice, suggestions, experience would be appreciated...

I had one of these quite a while back, another one is coming my way in the near future.

I know quite a few guys that work in the far north in the winter and this is the only jacket they will wear for most of the winter.

I have a Canada Goose Resolute Parka in Red, and I LOVE that thing.

I can't pull it out before -20 as it is just too warm, but even sub -40 I have not found the limit of it's performance. It was expensive at almost $600 on sale, but worth every penny IMO. I use it more than enough to justify the cost.

Some of my experience:

1. They fit big. You want them a little big, but don't think you need to order larger to layer, they have planned for that.

2. The Parkas are best for low-moderate activity like just walking around camp, fishing, riding a sled etc. While they are breathable, you just don't have any variable ventilation on the big ones. The shells layered up are better for active use.

3. Prepare to get a lot of compliments on it. Most frequent are "Damn, you look warm" (as they shiver away in front of you), and "Man I want one of those...". :D

I tried on a jacket like that one and it was real big.... it seemed like a jacket for someone spending a fair amount of time outdoors or in extreme weather... I loved it, but it was a bit beyond what I was looking for... The variation I am getting, well i just can't remember the name,... I know it isn't the resolute, but very similar...

I'll throw up a pic when I pick it up..

Mine is XL and dark green in colour. Great coat for really cold weather, but not for working or exercising hard in. You will sweat, and when you stop the parka gets very cold in a hurry.

Don't do it! Don't you know that parkas cause cold weather!

You don't see people wearing them in California do you?

^^ This is a great point, despite my efforts to wear shorts in the fall/winter, I'm being overpowered by all those kooks in parkas :\

Guess I'll just have to make bigger contributions to global warming.

Same here. Although I get more blank stares than compliments. With the hood up and fully zipped, my dad says I look like a caribou's arsehole.

What size are you looking for I have a freind who has one that he is looking to sell. He bought it for a Muscox and polar bear hunt and now has no use for it. PM me if your interested

I have one. I've fallen asleep in it while on a deer stand at -35. You don't move fast in it mind you, but it sure keeps you comfortable in really miserable conditions.

When wearing a Canada goose jacket make sure you don't venture out where there are waterfowl hunters as you will be a sure target.

I have both the Resolute and the Expedition parkas, and they seem to be close in warmth. I spent two years in the arctic, and seven more in the far reaches of Northern Ontario, so I can appreciate a good parka. I prefer the Resolute for some of its features over the Expedition.

Resolute: Longer parka length is nice in the wind, but for getting in and out of your vehicle it isn't quite as nice. It has places for your ID if you require to wear it in a visible location. The mesh pockets are nice for warmer packs or old fashioned hand warmers in really brutal conditions. Reflective tape is a nice touch for safety in the long dark winter. I've never needed the haul handles on the shoulders, but I can see their benefit if one were to need them.

Expedition: It is a little shorter, and more appropriate (IMHO) as a coat to wear if getting in and out of vehicles, although any parka is a PITA to wear in vehicles. It has less "stuff" on the outside and for day to day wear might be more suitable depending on what you do.

Either of these (or any of their other) parkas would make an excellent choice, and other than not having a fire retardant option such as Nomex, they have very little that can be improved upon.

I've had one for years. Great jacket. I use mine for ice fishing mostly.

Warning - the outer shell melts really good on snow blower exhausts :D
I called Canada Goose and they shipped me a square meter of the matching cloth for free and I had it sewn up.

I think LeBaron may carry them. I seem to recall seeing them in SIR as well, but I'm not sure if Cabelas stocks them now that they have taken over. The Canada Goose website lists places to get one.

I've been very fortunate, both of mine were purchased by employers, and they didn't want them back.
