Watched the show on Eider duck hunting today it was said that the rougher the water/weather the better the hunt. How do you recover a dead duck or kill a wounded duck when the water was that rough. The shore line was rocky and covered with sea plants and the tide was coming in.
 
Watched the show aswell, thought it was better then most episodes, as for the retrieving part, hunting brant here can be in the same kind of weather. In not so bad waves or calm seas a dog can easily make the retrieves but the waters like that episode I would definitely not want to send a dog out. They also used a boat which is smart but same goes for the dog, it could get pretty scary retrieving ducks against those waves crashing on the rocks. Since the tide is coming in the ducks should float towards the shore but you gotta make sure they're dead. With ducks and brant, if you just wing them and let them land they can dive under water and not surface for a good 30-40 feet, retrieval can get pretty hard if you just wound the birds.
 
I found myself wondering how strong tasting the eider ducks were. One spot in particular they said was good because the ducks were feeding on the refuse from the local fish plant. Maybe cook them in a curry with the emphasis on lots of spice.

I've hunted eiders not far from where that was filmed, but the we just tied the boat up to a herring weir and shot them as they passed. The fellow I was with had a Chesapeake retriever that just loved swimming in the Bay of Fundy in Jan/Feb.

Eider, scooters and other various sea birds are quite fun to hunt, but the fun stops there when it comes to eat them. The eiders are as big as geese and almost require buckshot to down them. #2 is a minimum.
