Canadian 29

Now you're telling me there's 5 (five) sheep to the Grand Slam, DAMN DAMN DAMN I'm getting to old for much more sheep hunting.

No, according to them you can take either the California or Rocky Mountain for the bighorn but don't need both but they are recongnized seperately but I think they also recognize fannin too.

I guess for a long time spirit bear would have been on that list? ( all white or panda color phased black bears found only in the great bear rain forest). Not sure if they were ever hunted as a specific sub-species.

The white phase of the black bear, the kermode, that you refer to by the names the antis coined for it, to gain more favourful publicity for them, has been protected from hunting since at least, the end of WW2.
The current system of Boone and Crocket scoring was started in 1950-51 and the first book of records was printed in 1952. It has records of 28 species of North American big game in it.

I think Kodiak is a seperate species of brown bear according to B+C but I'm not positive

edit. nvmd, just found out kodiak island is in Alaska. Guess I should look at a map one of these days.

This is the list of the recognized 29 animals that comprise the original North American 29...The Super Slam as it is called today. Just had a friend complete it at 36 years old. He's the youngest ever to do it. Lots of other lists around but this is the North American 29 list. Only 16 of them for me!

Just to clarify, this would be the list recognized and instituted by Safari Club International (SCI),not necessarily a complete list of huntable North American big game animals.

Pope and Young actually, SCI had nothing to do with it. It has long been recognized as the accepted North American 29 for both rifle or bow. Grand Slam/Ovis recently became the official record keeper for the North American 29 or as it's called now the Super Slam. As far as I know, it's the only official slam of big game in North America. Other groups definitely recognize some other subspecies of big game but I think this is the only one that records are kept for. SCI may have their own.....I'm not sure.

Got a link to that info? That's news to me.

SCI is the organization with all sorts of achievement awards and trophies, surely you're aware of this with all the hunting you've done.
Why would P&Y have a North American 29 for rifle and bow?

Yup SCI does have lots of awards for sure and I've been a member forever but that's not the origin of the North American 29. P&Y didn't keep the records for rifle or bow. They just coined the phrase North American 29 based on the species that qualified for P&Y at the time. I don't think they even kept track of people that achieved the benchmark....it was just based on their list of animals in North America. It was adopted by all hunters basically as the North American 29. Now Grand Slam/Ovis is the official keeper of it, just as they are for sheep Grand Slams. Grand slam and Super Slam are now trandmarked phrases. When you hear people talk about the North American 29, it's the list of animals I posted.

Not sure there's a single link but there is plenty of info if you google it.

I thought Ovis was sheep? I remember reading something a while back about lawsuits with FNAWS,etc. Either way, it must be a pretty new organization.

Here's a couple links to SCI's Grand Slam "North American 29" , just one of their 17 worldwide Grand Slams.

When referring to the Grand Slam of sheep, I was always under the impression that it was in regard to SCI's "Grand Slam of North American Wild Sheep".

Ya, SCI's 29 list differs greatly from the original list. In fact it includes way over 29 animals. Their records are run a bit different than others. When people speak of the North American 29, generally they are speaking of what's now called the Super Slam based on the original P&Y list. Yes, Grand Slam/Ovis did sue FNAWS over use of the term Grand Slam and won the law suit. They own the term Grand Slam now. FNAWS changed their name to the Wild Sheep Foundation and their slam of North American wild sheep is now called the Four North American Wild Sheep (FNAWS). All very confusing I know....lol

SCI records are fairly unique to SCI people. When you hear most if not nearly all people speak of the North American 29 or a sheep Grand Slam they are not refering to records kept by SCI.
