Canadian Ammo's Surefire forend clone

That end cap with the built in swivel is a PITA in more way than one. Replace it with a better setup and you are off to the races.

Same thing with a surefire.

I believe the battery is the same as the surefire (CR123)?? I'll let you know when I get a battery(s). The bulb seems to be an LED type and there seems to be some adjustment for beam focus.

Thanks! Do keep us posted. I am this close to ordering a couple, but really want to know how the lights perform, and how they hold up to recoil first.

OK, got two CR123's in it and amused Canuck223JR with a lights out zombie clearing exercise in the basement.:p

Verdict is even with 6v it's not a terribly bright light. The switch is momentary on and a tad small for my likes.

Still, would I buy a second? Probably yes. At $45 delivered, the forend isn't bad and a weak light is better than none.

Shooting review later.

Just curious, if the clone needs fitting, does this apply to the authentic surefire product as well? Is it a problem cause by the shorter barrel length more than the product itself?

I've got an actual Surefire on my 14" Remington, it required no fitting. I'm not sure what barrel length we're discussing in this case.

Geologist, I have much respect for you as I like to read 99% of what you say, but I do have one question: If you are going to put a knoxx stock and a surefire set-up, why to heck would you choose Norinco as a platform? Is it only for the shorter barrel? I'm just asking, cause I have a 18.5 M870 clone and it's the worst POS that I have ever bought. Your accessories are worth more than the gun itself... Eagerly waiting for your reply!

No offense taken roadwarrior, this is the internet after all and thank you for your kind words.

It is a project gun that just kept going

Originally it was a replacement work shotgun for my very unreliable Mossberg 500A.You know the camp shotgun that gets used for everything, slugs, crack flares etc.

The HP9-1 is a very cheap way to get a 14" barrel. When you need to lug a work shotgun around in vehicles and aircraft, shorter is better.

After testing it with a lot of shells, and I mean a LOT, I realized that this HP9-1 is very, very reliable. As in zero failures. I'm not really brand conscious, to me 100% reliable is 100% reliable. So then the ghost rings, extended magazine and chokes went on.

After I broke the Streamlight mount that I used to mount my TLR-1 light, I decided to go with the Surefire.

The Knoxx Spec-ops wasn't really necessary as the HP9-1 is a heavy shotgun and I don't feel much recoil even with slugs. I just wanted one. :D

So now it is a camp/home defense shotgun that I consider to be on par with (in terms of reliability) my camp rifles eg. Marlin 1895 GS and a BRNO 602 carbine in .375 H&H.

YMMV.

what do you guys suggest for a light between the Surefire clone and the actual Surefire? i'd like something that's better quality than the clone, but i can't justify 300 bucks for an actual surefire for a $300 gun.

Possibly a railed forearm with a flashlight mount? That way you can use a regular 1" flashlight such as Surefire's G2 Nitrolon (or LED) without the expense of a dedicated grip light.

You could also attach a pic rail to the top of the barrel and use an offset mount (see Larue and Daniel Defense) to keep the flashlight out of the sights.

Cool, thanks, I did'nt want to be perceived as if I was bashing you. I wish I had the same reliability from my own Norinco. It jams, the butt-stock comes loose often and it tends to rust easily. But I'm stuck with it and I would not dare sell it to some poor soul. I bought it as a camp gun too, I just wish I had gotten something a little more dependable...

A Streamlight magazine mount and an M3 or TLR-1 is a decent combo.

I liked mine until the mount broke.

Streamlight mount with a TLR-1 on a Norinco HP9-1. This mount failed.

Reviving an old thread.

Im thinking of getting one, how much cutting is required, and how difficult is it to get it to fit? I assume we're only cutting some of the inside of the foreend out? Nothing major?

Pics would be nice of whats needed to be done.
