Canadian Army to acquire semi-automatic sniper weapon

Defence industry representatives say they have been briefed about plans by the Canadian Army to acquire what is being called the Semi-Automatic Sniper Weapon or SASW.

Canadian Army spokeswoman Krysthle Poitras explained to Defence Watch about the SASW:

“The Semi-Automatic Sniper Weapon (SASW) is still in the planning phase,” she pointed out. “It is expected that 272 SASW will be delivered to the Canadian Army by end of 2017 or early 2018; however, at this time, we don’t have a delivery date because there is no contract in place with any specific company. The purpose of the weapon is to provide our snipers with a lighter weapon that can be used to deliver a high volume of precise fire at a shorter range (such as in built-up areas), and for quick engagement on fleeting targets or for sniper team protection. The SASW is expected to receive the C20 designation (small arms weapons are numbered sequentially as they come into service). The SASW is a new capability as we do not have a semi-automatic precision rifle with scope and suppressor in service within the Canadian Army.”

Yeah, right. I'll believe it when I see 'em.

Sounds like a recipe for success......

272 only?
Just get the US to send a few M21s over before the wall goes up. Drop in the bucket for them.
Whats a few dings and scratches?

On a more serious note, does Desert Tech produce a semi .308 bullpup sniper rifle?
That would be a nice gun if they do!

Edit: desert Tech .308 MDR.

there are only 9 sniper platoons in the entire Army 272 actually sounds like a lot.... considering 2-3 man teams only needing 1 per team....

Surge quantities perhaps, and there are other snipers than just in the line infantry regt.

not enough to drastically change the numbers. OP says Army so thats not tier 1,2, Navy or Air Force. also doesn't include Marksmanship rifles. so really the number of sniper rifles doesn't change much, you're basically looking at BG TAC and 9er TAC, maybe a few more outliers. not really enough to change the numbers. especially considering they aren't replacing the .338 and .50's just augmenting. if 20 went per PL that still leaves 92 rifles. it seems high as far as number go thats all I'm saying

We have an HK MR308 that belongs to customer - did some homework and this or other HK would be my pick.

Shot a Daniel Defense .308 at CORE and it had no jams with many rounds pounded through by many shooters, unlike other AR-style .308s that we have seen.

press release:
Heckler & Koch has confirmed that a modified version of its G28 rifle has won the Army's Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System contract.

The gun will replace the M110 made by Knight's Armament as a culmination of the Army's desire for a shorter, lighter rifle that didn't sacrifice accuracy or performance. A press release from Heckler & Koch said the G28 is a light-weight variant of the 7.62 mm gas-powered G28 in use by the German Army, adjusted to fit the U.S. Army's requirements.
and so on
