Canadian feathers ruffled by gunshots from U.S. duck hunters

I bet this lady #####es to the city of Sarnia that there is too much goose #### in Canetera Park all summer as well. You can't win folks there are too many geese but OMG don't shoot any. I live in Sarnia I heard the shots it was hardly a war zone.
There are so many geese around here that 1000s of them fly over my home AM and PM.

Perhaps we should stop shooting them and make this woman clean up the park And local golf courses, she might become a bit more tolerant.

where did you get that info from? I have numerous times over the years. Never heard of that rule.

It is illegal to discharge a firearm within 500 meters of shore as per Sarnia bylaw (the entire south shore from the bridge to at least Mandaumin rd). If I recall correctly, there is also a regulation in the hunting regs. that when hunting from a boat, you must be within a certain distance from a natural reed bed (I recall 300 meters if memory serves, i don't have the full regs. handy). So you are caught in a catch 22 as there are no reed beds there. Show me any evidence that you are allowed to hunt there as I would love to get a few of those big fat Canatara geese in the freezer. You cant hunt the river until well past Corunna as it is all posted. Most anyone I know that hunts waterfowl is doing so at least 15 km's to the east of sarnia.

The municipality may have such a bylaw but I had a CO further up the Lake Huron shoreline point out that the Great Lakes are under Ontario Government jurisdiction. When our local municipality came up with a similar law for a no discharge of firearms bylaw he said the bylaw ended at the shoreline.
I'm not a lawyer, but he was willing to go out into the water and discharge a firearm and challenge the bylaw in court.

I grew up in what was then "Sarnia Township" and is now in the city. I hunted and trapped in the farm country behind our house and regularly walked through the neighbors yard with a .22 or a shotgun slung over my shoulder. If you were to do that today I am pretty sure you would end up with a 911 call and a tactical team on top of you :(

I just read through the migratory bird regs and can't find anything about the 300m from a reed bed. that is the case on Lake St Clair and rondeau bay, but can't find that reference anywhere else. Can anyone confirm this? Typical regs are written by lawyers and not just straight forward, so I very well may have missed it.

appreciate the info and clarification.

What does the Town Charter say the boundaries are? AFAIK they have no authority to extend bylaws beyond those limits.

True but I'm sure the MNR has much deeper pockets than I do when it comes time to get lawyers involved.

It used to be so as long as you are east of Modeland rd. but the city has grown and I'm not so sure that would apply now.

I may be remembering incorrectly. We used to hunt lake St. Clair and Rondeau a lot.

I don't know what the charter says but in the official planning documents they do show a "shoreline maintenance" buffer that extends into the lake.

100 meter from the shore line...
Federal Jurisdiction after that ( RCMP)
Some lawyers are not all that bright.

I live and hunt in Sarnia, the city bylaw in regards to hunting within city limits states you may only hunt geese, on property of 40 acres in size or more. Shotgun only...and you must have written permission from the landowner. The city boundaries extend to Mandaumin Rd on the North side of the 402 and to Telfer Rd on the South side. You can archery hunt for deer on smaller land Parcels with landowner permission.

Unfortunately I am unfamiliar with the regulations and bylaws pertaining to hunting Lake Huron and St Clair river in and around
Sarnia.
The area in and around Sarnia proper is filthy with geese and they do foul the Parks and golf courses in and around
The City of Sarnia.

The same people will have much more tolerance of Americans every week when they cross the bridge to fill up their car with gas, buy beer, groceries, smokes, you know your typical snowflake hypocrite.

Good info, I didn't know that.

Just FYI, here is the city of sarnia bylaw. https: //sarnia.civicweb.net/document/40798

I've been looking into this quite a bit and other than the above saying I need to be 500m from shore, I can't see any reason why I can't duck hunt from a boat out in lake huron. (assuming I'm following the waterfowl regs regarding a boat).

appreciate the info and discussion guys.
