CAnadian Forces Veterans Who Used The C1A1

Finger's baby. Always wanted to try out the built in dust cover mag charger but never got the ammo in clips.

Only used the C1 and C2 in Basic. No mag loaders or stripper clips that I recall. IVI in beige 20 round carton boxes.

After Basic I was in recee and only used the 9mm Sterling.

Maybe it was a 48th Highlander thing...

I recall range exs where only linked was available and spending much time twisting & pushing ammo out of the links and filling the cans with the loose rounds. Being able to fire 30 round C2 mags filled with tracer was the only benefit :D I'm not sure if that was an officially sanctioned practice ;)

de-linking was sop for everybody - as was making drill rounds with 2 pairs of channel-lock pliers and a hammer-funny how the stuff we saw in basic seemed to disappear when you got back to unit- chrome drill rounds, feeler guages for the gpmg, ( that's the reason you carried 15 cents- to set the headspace on the gpmg) ,cleaning rods( you used a pullthrough)

i've still got a mag pouch for the c2- a rubberized nylon one, and i use it for holding my ham 2 meter rig- sure , you can't access fingerboard, but it keeps it dry- we got the green bren gun pouches as kit, american style helmets, and canteens- plastic ones, no cups, and only 1 /customer

I remember having to de-link gpmg ammo for the C1A1 a couple of times.

I remember having to link ammo for a C6 shoot, once, when it all came on stripper clips.

We all know that the army was oh, so logical with supplies, right!

Yes, I too remember the mag loader doodad being issued as EIS with the rifle, bayonet, sling, and four mags. Ammo came in a variety of packaging options, usually never what you were hoping for!

Oh, and wouldn't the nomenclature police call them "magazine chargers" with the C1, rather than "stripper clips"?

I think we were still speaking English with the FNs, and only really switched to American jargon with the C7 / C9?

I carried the C2 most of the time and we loaded from stripper clips with the mag loader...don't remember ever using the clip slot in the dust cover.

nelly:

IIRC (I'm getting old here) we had mag chargers that sat on top of the magazines to be stuffed. Then we had the 5 rounds on a stripper clip. Gotta be careful not to hurt /rip your thumb apart when pushing down on the cartridges.

And strangely enough we are still using the 10 rd stripper clips (black plastic CF issued, but found in the treeline bushes at Borden's ranges) to reload our LAR-15 10 round AR15 pistol magazines for the ORA Service Rifle matches. That's how we civvies bomb up our magazines in between serials of Match 2 (new CFSAC matches). Lots of fun!

ammo in stripper clips showed up a long time before 1980- i had it in basic in 1970 and the rubber bandoliers too

I am not saying they didn't have it, but for issue to us it was always the boxed stuff till the 80's then we started getting the other stuff.

I was in for 15 yrs from 73-88. We were issued mag chagers and most times the ammo came in cardboard boxes with no stipper clips. But once in a while we would get the rubber bandoleers with the clips. While in Germany, I think we use to get them in the boxes with stripper clips as well. I was in at the end of the FN's life with the CF in Germany, and maybe that's why we got more ammo on clips then.... trying to use up some war stock before the change to 5.56.

I guess our unit lucked out all we ever got for 762 was stripper clips in boxes of 20 or plastic bandoliers I like the FNC1 mag charger it worked great

As I remember, IVI 7.62 ammo came in ammo boxes with cloth bandoleers. Each pouch held 2 5-round stripper clips in a cardboard sleeve. We used mag loaders that you pushed on top of the mag and then loaded with 4 5-round stripper clips. We used a bare stripper clip to push the rounds into the mag to save cutting your fingers. Fast and easy..:)

You guys are making my day.
I feel old having done my basic in the 80's.

60's and 70's!!!!!!!!

Your FOSSILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd feel bad for my comments but I probably did push ups for you at one time or another.

I do miss the days of banging away free ammo through the C1 or the C2.

I never saw the stripper clips either.

Just used my big ole thumb to get the job done.

Link licked a$$ once the temp. dropped and your fingers turned red!!!!!!

Yes saw it all,mag chargers, stripper clips, most came in the 20 rnd brown boxes. Wish there was a better way to load the SMG,brutal when fingers are cold. De-linking 7.62 was fun also, good workout for the arms but usually stopped after half a belt.

When I joined in 1964 all of our ammo was the excellent DA in 5 rd stripper clips put up in the plastic bandoliers that held 2 5 rd stripper clips in each "pocket". The mag charger was issued as part of the individual rifle's EIS at that time. Interestingly enough, the only other mag charger that I've used was for the M1918A2 BAR. It was the same idea as the one for the FN and made mag loading a lot easier than the later "economy packs" of IVI ball with 20 rds per cardboard box a la civvie style.

A few years ago I bought some of the old DA ammo in the original sealed bandoliers. The fellow that was selling it believed that it was match ammo.;) Close, but no cigar.

I remember the 7.62 ammo that would often come on stripper clips in bandoliers held together with black safety pins. They had to crack down because some reservists were decorating their uniforms with quantities of the bandolier safety pins to emulate some sort of 1980's civillian punk fashion.

I've de-linked ammo on one range day to fire through rifles, and a week later re-link loose ammo to fire in the g-pig. Good times.;)
