Is there any Canadian hunters out there who already know a thing about Sambar Deer and have future plans or wishes to hunt such elusive animal?

or is there just too much other stuff in the world to chase, than our big premiere deer?

WhelandLad,There are many things on my bucket list and heading down under to walk on a sandy white beach is top of the list.
Spend some time on the Whitunday Islands and hanging out at Uluru watching the sunrise are amongst the list.
And iffen there is time to wander the scrub while doing all these things, then yes a Sambar deer is on that list too.
Sounds like Hilldog has a plan in the making.

Rob,
I like where you are heading with the white sandy beaches, the whitsundays and the Uluru sunrise.......... been fortunate enough to experience all of this myself and rekon the Rock is up there with some of the most beautiful places in the world ...in a weird, dry, barron way. the rock itself as it changes colour as the sun sets, is quite the sight.

I don't really have much of a plan in mind, I do have a long term plan in mind to become prolific in finding sambar deer for hunters to then shoot, to harvest their own meat and learn a thing or two from my efforts and their hard earned ;) ..... However I am NOT here to sell a huntz because I'm simply not in the Business yet, its a grey area in Australia, at present.

What I would like to try an figure out is if these deer are in the eyes of any hunters around the World, but especially my Canadian pals!
The Sambar is native to Southern China/Asia but the Australian herd is one of the more important herds and certainly the largest.

I don't think the Sambar is understood outside of Australia, yet I feel there is so much that the Harder core hunters would love about the Sambar deer, behaviour and terrain that the world needs to know about what We have and how Accesible it really is, even for International hunters as of 2018 and for the short term while things are up in the air and with so much localised Drama through hunters it wont be long before our Rule book is rewritten.

a bit like myself an Mule Deers, no interest in the White flags yet to me the Mule deer behaves similar to the Sambar, but gives a bit more opportunity to the hunter for a shot :)

perhaps someone has looked into the deer enough to be keen enough?
thanks mate

WL, I will appologize for what may have been an insinuation of becoming a guide or offering a hunt for money.
That was not my intention...merley implying you where looking for like minded peoples to come and experience the thrill of the hunt in the Land Down Under (sounds cliche', but not intended).
Myself, the thrill is the hunt of any game animal I wish to eat, but first I have to get into its turf to learn its habits.
I have not researched the Smbar Deer and have just now learned it was imported form China.
Keep the Thrill Alive HD and prosper.
Hey, have not heard mention of the young one of yours on a hunt of late, what gives?
Rob

Just like every other place, Aus appeals for hunting and fishing. If for nothing else, the novelty.

My wife has different ideas of holidays. She wants to explore real people, and is interested in communist tourism....the cult of Che Guevara......whereas I would like to sit in Hemmingway's
Chair and go Marlin fishing.

Aus appeals for hunting and fishing. Sambar and Asiatic water buffalo......New Zealand red stag....African plains game.

A short window, while I'm young enough to do it, and old enough to afford it.

Down Under is on the to-do list sometime in the near future. But way more than enough hunting opportunities for me around here so I've got my fill.

Go have a look at Uluru, check out the Reef,....

I think you’ll find by far the most interest in buffalo hunting, and the current Australian hunt market reflects that, there’s a good few different cervids in Canada. Speaking for BC off the top of my head there are eight different deer / elk / moose to get through, I’d aim your operation at general Aussie bush adventures that happen to include deer. Many a Canadian is after hunting in sunshine during the off season and the quarry really doesn’t matter (we hunted Kauai for boar this winter, would have hunted deer just as happily). Or chase the buffalo, or fins, just get some sun on pasty Canadian skin doing something hunting or outdoors related and you’ll have people showing up.

Australia is on my bucket list, although I must admit if I am going to hunt Australia my first priority would be to chase buffalo. I would not turn up the opportunity to hunt a sambar, particularly if I could tag it on to a buffalo hunt. I'm considering the merits of a hunt south of the equator this winter/spring, since I likely won't get to do much hunting here in Canada this fall. Glad to read anything more you'd care to post and help me narrow down my choices.

I would love to hunt on all continents. For that, I would need to get to Aus or something very close. I have no money, and no knowledge of what exactly I'd do though...

Sambar seems cool. I can't say I know enough to really say one way or the other what I would consider a must hunt in Aus though...

Since we pay Kiwis to come hunt deer here they should return the favor and invite us over for Sambar....

Don't worry mate, they hired kiwis to shoot half a dozen goats in a national park over here in Australia , in helicopters for some 70,000 $ ............
the kiwi sambar are very small herd in the north island, if you go to nz the beauty is the diy public land red stags, well well well away from the genetic bred high fencers let go behind the farm jobs..............

Sika deer in North Island- would be awesome.
Red stag in Sth Island. beauty
Tahr - Sth island- West Coast
Chamois -also Sth Island- West Coast.
Wapiti- Fiordland /Balloted Bugle periods. a lot of History- One that is a MUST for any Elk Grand Slammer!

Quite a good number of Samber, in new Zealand now, two locations, central NI and west costal NI, I would add fallow deer, to Whelanlad list,
The beauty of New Zealand hunting is its aviable, at near no cost, on crown land, with good trophy potential, for about half the dozen or so game animal's,

I like to bag a big Samber, I've only had one good big stag, in my sights, and only had a .222, so elected not to try. they a big animal, size of an elk, and tough and hard to kill.

Ps, your all invited,
bring a bottle of Forty creek, ya boots and boom stick, a sense of adventure and humour.

Some exceptional Fallow Genetics let go around New Zealand, including the Reds from farmed backgrounds, some of the localised herds produce massive heads where as the bush deer , the true trophys can vary from area to area!

good to hear your replies southernman

When is the best time of year to hunt Sambar down under? I have a potential trip lined up to OZ this Septemberish. My son has been in NZ for the last 6 months but has just headed to East Africa for 3 or 4 months and he's planning to head to OZ after that. Was planning to visit him sometime in the fall. As for long guns - how hard is it to bring them over? Would like to bring my Whelen and my .308 if i go.

That's not a bad time of year for sambar! between may and sept is the better time.

yeh no real drama with the rifles but a few papers to fill, nothing that is too difficult though, storage can be the only problem when you're out on holidays but having someone with an address who can store the firearms safe , is fine. hunting permits are easily obtained for the southern states... up in the others can be a bit different but sambar are mostly in Victoria.
